Errrr... I mean "Stargate Universe" starts this January. Really? I was kind of hoping that they would move the show forward by a hundred years (or so) and have a more unified Earth setting where all the technology was more integrated into daily life on Earth and her colonies. ~String
Yeah but that would require a bigger budget. Shooting the show on a single ship with unknown actors is a lot cheaper.
Nothing dates as fast as a vision of the future. Let's look at other SciFi that failed to make accurate preductions, oh yes, Star Trek. They have flip phones, but they never take a personal call. They send real people down to planets and risk their lives, not robots or probes. Nobody is openly gay. Except Data, who is such a closet droid it's untrue. Diversity is not tolerated. Every alien has the same personality as his peers. Well, that racism, really, or just lazy scriptwriting, all Klingons are pissed off, all Ferengi will rip you off, all Vulcans logical, blah blah. BORING. Sorry, gettig off topic. Anyway, throwing 100 years into the future just wouldn't work. I'm amazed I have the toys now I always wanted as a kid (laser pointers, Walkie Talkies, mobile phones, computers) that's all I could imagine, and it arrived in 25 years. I cannot imagine life in another 100, and scriptwriters clearly can't either.
Well, I mean, sure. But I really wasn't looking for an investment that would withstand the test of time. I was looking for a TV show to mindlessly entertain me. Let future generations worry about judging our view of them. But let's face it, SG's view of future-esque technology is off by gargantuan amounts. ~String
You should read the books, not novelisations of episodes, but actual continuations. Anywho, The tech in that is also advancing, sort of like as we realise that the advandtages we can get. We don't have holodecks.
Yeah, on that subject, what development in technology do you want to have in your pocket in the next ten years?
A giant cumbersome laser-staff that clunkily opens up a the tip, weighs a ton... but looks really great! ~String

The more and more I read about this, the more it looks like Syfy is actually pulling out all the stops in creating something that's actually good. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! Extended Promo Trailer ~String
Ugh... If it turns out to be another teenage romance, with not one intelligent thought in its creation.. well.. Eureka will actually look good. I mean, a lot of SG-1's, and Atlantis's episodes had some valid sci-fi basis. Also, there better be some crossovers. If it's a reboot of the entire series then it will be annoying.
Did you bother to read the promo info, watch the trailer and/or look a the wiki on it? It has NO teen drama in it. In fact, it looks wholely inspired by BSG. It's keeps all the back story from Atlantis and SG1, but has given it an obvious "grittier" look. It's off earth and won't be making many visits. It's obviously Syfy's flagship show now. ~String
I have to say, episode one was not encouraging. Granted they have a lot of characters to introduce, but watching them fret over non-functioning technology is not engaging. First, it's "why wont the 9th chevron engage?" then it's "why won't life support work?" then, in an ever so banal twist "why can't we close this door?" "Stargate: Maintenance in Space" is not going to be much fun to watch, so hopefully they get over this plot device tout de suite. Not since Star Trek: Enterprise have I been less enthused about sci-fi maintenance issues.
