Because about half of all HIV cases in the US are among gay men, and according to the research circumcision doesn't seem to do anything to protect them (it only offers some measure of protection to people in heterosexual relationships). Also about half of all HIV cases in the US are among blacks, who according to many studies are much more likely to engage in non-monogamous sex without condoms.

Is circumcision seem as the equivalent of docking a dog's tail or cropping its ears. It serves no purpose other than cosmetic?

That's what I see it as. Despite what most people say, I think they do too, always worried about what the boys in the locker room will say when they see it and that's pretty vain, so that sounds like a cosmetic reason to me. There really isn't a valid medical excuse like removing a ruptured appendix.

Probably not. My son is because my husband is, his father and brother are, as are mine. If my family pierced my ears as an infant, I probably would have had the same thing done to my daughter.
    Both cosmetic.

The antiSemitism in this issue is getting a bit thick, eh?

You guys are going to have to make up your minds: you're cycling between social climbing, anti-masturbation, and perfidious Jewish influence. Perhaps some combination: perfidious Jews sabotaging the social climbing of innocent Christians, by conning them into looking like Jews? Or is it the creation of camouflage by Jewsih doctors who want to social climb in the shower without masturbating?
You might want to check on when and where an extra four seconds in a shower became a routine, normal option for ordinary people. The custom of circumcision is thousands of years old, and widely spread throughout a variety of cultures.
Several places in Africa - everywhere the comparison is possible (i.e. one of the local tribes circumcises, and another one doesn't). The correlation seems to be with the prevalence of lesions under the foreskin, especially fungal, which create an avenue for female to male heterosexual transmission - otherwise fairly rare and difficult. In Japan, etc, such lesions are not nearly as prevalent.

I don't care if it has possible benefits. That little infant can't consent.

Let him grow up and make his own decision when he's old enough to make an informed one.

Incorrect, the taboo on eating pork was due to the unsuitability of raising pigs in an arid climate. Pigs eat things that human could eat, while goats eat all kinds of browse. Pigs require cool temperatures, otherwise they need to wallow, which is water intensive, and they will use urine and feces if they can't get mud. In tropical areas, these problem do not occur. While it is possible to raise pigs in the middle east, it would use up too many resources in ancient times if everyone did it, and that made it socially unacceptable. The taboo is perfectly logical, even if the people that follow it do so for irrational religious reasons.

Circumscision probably evolved the same way, keeping clean was more difficult without running water, and the Jews were all about keeping clean, with their ritual baths and such. Such problems do not occur in modern times.

Doesn't that depend on what the benefits are?

Delaying increases the costs and risks enormously, so the decision later is not the same one. There is a penalty for delay.

Maybe to clarify: I'm not arguing for routine circumcision. If I had a son, he would probably not be circumcised. I'm arguing against the overheated rhetoric - there probably are, or at least were, some serious benefits to the custom, and the costs are clearly reasonably bearable. It's not a slam dunk decision, on any grounds.

The source and reason for circumcision is documented in the Jewish old testament, spidergoat. Hygiene, as far as we know, was not a part of it.

They might not have remembered themselves why they started it.

It should not be legal for adults to mutilate the weeners of baby boys. It's completely unnecessary. It also completely removes any choice from the babies who are victimized. Once it has been done to their flesh -- then it's done, and that's it. They are stuck with it for the rest of their lives. If we're going to allow such grotesqueries to be committed upon our own babies within our culture, then we should also stop persecuting Mormons for marrying multiple 16-year-old women. That's a religious rite, too... and it's a helluva lot less horrid than circumcision is.

'k... I'm done. Except to say that I am not putting down anyone who has been circumcised. I am putting down our society, for allowing and misrepresenting circumcision in the first place. What if we all decided that babies are more attractive if you cut off one of their toes..? Would that be okay, too..? Because fundamentally, circumcision is no different. It is the barbaric removal of healthy and FUNCTIONAL genital tissue, all for the sake of some imagined aesthetics, or for the sake of some primitive religious or social ritual. It should be a criminal offense to do such horrible things to helpless little babies. If it were not for the religious issues associated with circumcision, then I am sure that it would have been outlawed long ago.

Isn't it funny that we pass laws against beating a child... but we still allow parents to mutilate their genitals for life, right after they're born..?

I very seriously doubt that a group of nomadic tribesman from thousands of years ago would have been scientifically-minded enough to notice that people who were circumcised had fewer health problems than people who weren't. Even ignoring the level of sophistication that would imply, that wouldn't explain why people started doing it in the first place. You would need a pretty large group to do it before any benefits could be noticed.

I'm sure you're all desperate to know...... I have not been nor ever intend to be circumcised. Never had to worry about keeping my penis clean, it's not that difficult really, and I don't go shagging people without protection. Education is the key here.

My little boy is in no danger of me getting him circumcised, but if he chooses to have it done when's he's older then so be it. No need to force it on your children or anyone else's children.

    Nasor,
Oh really? The aborigine of Australia knew that ants had antibacterial properties, something science only discovered recently. You would be surprised at the scientific sophistication of rural folklore.

That sounds like some made-up nonsense, spidergoat. I doubt that such people even knew what bacteria were or that they existed.
