You know times are tough when you jump the turnstile to get to work but you have no job and your underwear is one week old.

you know times are though when minimum wage, no benefit jobs can't be found.

the temp agencies around here are now turning people away. They have no jobs.

you know times are tough when the following is reported as "good news."

    "...
The Case-Shiller Home Price Index shows that prices fell only 17.1%, year on year in May, better than the 17.8% expected and better than the 18.1% drop in April ..."

From Schwab's Morning Alert Email to me.

You know times are rough when "The idiot's guide to liquor store robbing." is number three on the best seller list.

you know times are tough when people in the US are willing to live in a 168 sq ft apartment. Its about the size of a parking space.

First off: if they were not driving those big boats of gas guzzlers, it would be as big as two parking places!

Secondly, get rid of the mattress against the wall - use a Murphy bed (folds into the wall.)

Thirdly, get a compact frig - that moster in the corrner is too big -another energy hog. A compact one about 1 m tall can double as your table, both for eating and your computer later.

Hell with a few more of these efficiency improvements you can put a sign in the window stating:

Space to sublet - Free to good looking girl* who will shair bed with me.

    -------------
*Or guy, if that is your preference. Probably will get so many applications in these tough times that you can audition a new one every week.

Bath is wash tub* or down the hall. Toilet is down there too, except at night -then you just open the window and cut loose!

*Store it when not in use by hook so it hangs outside the window.

Yea and there's a nice large window for throwing myself out of.Cause that's what would happen if I was living in that dog house.

dog house? Prison cell comes to mind for me. Hell, a person might as well stay home and live with Mom & Dad.
Can they legally call it an apartment when all it is is a bedroom?

Hey for real,I have seen shows on PBS where the Japanese live close to this lifestyle.Reason is,prices are insane for land and housing. And the other reason is cause there is no land left to have a sizable home on.

But hey I think I figured out the layout of this tiny apartment. The fridge is really a pull out kitchen on top and a pull out toilet on bottom.Fridge just looks better. The wall heater doubles as a flip up burner for cooking. The mattress is hollow for storing clothes and blankets. And lastly if you look close at the carpet you will see a joint.Yep that's to help with the tiny drive you crazy size of the apt.

    Yes I'm crazy.Thanks...

The units come with a built-in bed, a fridge and a sink. The communal kitchen, which consists of one oven and one sink, is downstairs.

But the article doesn't say where the bathroom is. I think peeing out the window and standing in the rain might be it.

In major Japanese business cities there are “filing cabinet” style beds you can rent by the hour for a quick rest or for the whole night.

The trains back to you suburban house are very crowded so why waste time when you must work late? Just rent a pull out bed, climb in, push the “close button,” and there you are in your private, clean, less than meter square, two meter deep*, bed compartment. Scream if you like; they are sound proof. You control the ventilation, the music, the temperature, the lighting, etc. - It not so bad for a few hours rest. I believe now there may be even internet connection with a voice controlled computer and display above your head included in the higher class units. Geshee not included (strickly BYO, if permitted) .

Get on the stick NYC -your slipping behind the times!

*Japanese are short – no need for longer space.

You know times are tough (in USA) when American made beer cans have one side printed in Mandarin.

    From Jonski Blogski:

700,000 jobs lost per month in the US (according to Prez Obama on David Letterman show, 09/22/09) - guess they don't discriminate by age, right? :bugeye:

I could see myself living in something like that.
One part I would never compromise however - I need my own bathroom and shower space. I'm flexible about the kitchen, but bathroom/shower is a must.

Also -- walls will need to be as close to soundproof as possible.
