I believe that any war can be stopped .
1 : if the masses know the truth they will not support the war .
2 : The executives do not fight in wars. The soldiers do . If the soldiers refuse the wars then the executives can do nothing .
3 : if the media tell the truth about the war and educate the masses about peace instead, the war goes nowhere .
4 :If people respect themselves and have principles of resolving issues peacefully ; no war will start .

When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace.

The world will also stagnate and decay. The human desire for power and self-improvement is what drives us; there might be a conflict of wills, in which case the superior comes out the victor.

That said, war cannot be compared to glaciers. War is solely created by humans, and thus entirely under our control and it is entirely our power to stop it; glaciers are not entirely under our control, and it is not under our power to stop them. Wars exist as long as we acknowledge and sustain them.

Don't you mean SOME of us. The majority of people would care less about war, they would rather work, eat, sleep and live life as best they can without any wars making many people die.

"We" as in human beings. War is like morality or good or justice; it is artificial and its existence depends on nothing more than our acknowledgement.

NOT if they are touched directly by wars like themselves , their friends, relatives ....etc. Wars are hell for those with brains and heaven for those without any sense like lions, tigers...etc in the jungles .

Funny isn't it that most wars are for money, land or power, not to make life better for everyone but to help those in charge of things. Seems that the leaders could prevent wars by not wanting so much for themselves but try to help their own countrypeople try to have a better life.

Isn't the world controlled by corrupt, lying, selfish, greedy tyrants everywhere...?. In the U.S. how many millions of dollars were raised and spent by Obama and McCain...?. Can everyone raise all that cash?. The political spectrum is a crazy theater whereas the actors are real gangsters . If only the masses knew all the dealings behind closed doors for our Honorable politicians !. Huh....hounorable..?. They call themselves so .

Hey, I just saw this!! And the answer is 'No'. The "world" is controlled by the multitude of the great unwashed ...ALLOWING.... the corrupt, lying, selfish, greedy tyrants to have the illusion of control.

For years and years I blamed those corrupt,...., etc, people for all the ills in the world, but it ain't true. There are so very few of those in power, yet there's about umpty-eleven gazillion of the great unwashed peasants who do nothing whatsoever to control their own lives. So, ....fuck 'em, let 'em eat cake!! ..or whatever it is they can find, 'cause they don't deserve any better.

I apologise for just jumping in without reading through the thread but just want to mention the possiblity of Highly Advanced Visitors From Outer Space having an influence on a war-free world, by acting as Earth Guardians and protecting us from comet/asteroid strikes as well all the 'other things'. It's better to think of this then continual self-destruction isn't it? Does this make me a crackpot maybe?

Warfare has demonstrated a declining trend in the perspective of anthropological and sociological consensus. It's become ever more difficult to make and sustain war, as mankind has evolved. As we've become exponentially more efficient at killing each other, we're also becoming less prone to making war.

Greater personal and psychological security decreases the emotional motivation and intellectual justification for warfare. Over the centuries the basic needs of humans have become easier to satisfy and maintain. Where there is insecurity in terms of basic needs (including collective psychological security) there is a higher propensity for warfare. Where basic needs are unfulfilled (due to overpopulation or isolation) there is a higher likelihood for warfare. Humans are becoming ever more adept at satisfying our physical and psychological needs. In affluent societies, warmaking requires the deliberate manufacture of psychological insecurity, and the repression of reason and debate, which is unsustainable in a burgeoning information age (and not for lack of effort). On a global scale, even as we face the challenges of climate change, peak production in fossil fuels, and overpopulation we also look forward to the approaching promise of intelligent sustainability in manipulating resources, and of peak human population. We're a problem-solving species, and growing in the understanding that violence is not the final solution to our needs and aspirations.

Growing life-expectancy reduces warfare: It has been consistently young males (adolescents and young adults) who are most prone to participating in warfare, and their proportion is declining as life-spans increase in the human population as a whole. Conversely, where young males are in higher proportion and are politically ascendant in their youth, there is a greater tendency toward pack behavior and violence. Longer lifespans also deter the persistence of dehumanization necessary for warfare- With more time to reflect, the falsehoods of dehumanization are increasingly recognized as untruth, and more old warriors become peacemakers.

Growing intellectualism reduces warfare: As mankind continues to gain higher levels of awareness through the generations, the dominance of Darwinian competition for reproduction and resources has been shifting in terms of behavior and battlefields. It's been said "The pen is mightier than the sword" because issues and concepts of great importance throughout the species and through succeeding generations are becoming less often and less durably validated by violence, than they are validated by reason.

Growing human integration reduces warfare: Just as integration of tribes brought us to the relative stability of nations, the accelerating global integration of markets and cultures is fast reducing the practicality, profitability, and saleability of warfare.

Growing destructive capability reduces warfare: "Might makes right" utterly collapses as a reasonable proposition when destructive potential surpasses MADness (Mutually Assured Destruction of participants in warfare).

Although the merchants of warfare strive to amplify collective fears, time is clearly not on their side, and reason is steadily overcoming violence as the dominant behavior shaping ourselves and our worlds. So can war be stopped? Yes: That's what is clearly happening through history. The wheels of war won't stop turning today- but their consistent perceptible deceleration will inevitably wind down to a full stop, and humanity will find a new balance: We'll still be here when war is over, beating our swords into wonderful plowshares, and unlocking a bounty to share in lasting peace, that is almost (but not entirely) unimaginable today.

    Utter nonsense.

World War I and WWII probably killed more people than every other pre 1800's war put together.

And when the next wave of warfare goodies comes around, you can be sure even more people will die.

What we need to do is abolish the military.
