This is going to be short because I'm supposed to be finishing a grant for review about now, and because my rage burns like an incandescent flare, and I want to rage before I cool off and just accept that some people are stupid.

The wife is conservative and watches Fox News all the time. Fair enough. Conservatives get to talk, liberals get to talk, everyone deserves to talk. Fine.

    Sean Hannity.

Hannity has been going through the pork list for the Stimulus package, beating on one project after another. Sure: some of them are spurious. Bridge to nowhere. Free art on the sidewalk. Basically, a little salary and some materials, and no permanent jobs. Fine. We get it.

But Hannity's latest accusations of pork also includes: Honeybee research. That's right. Sean isn't down with the honeybee work. This isn't quite a literal quote, but Seany thinks that "bees have been around for millions of years, I don't think we need to worry about them". Well. Without mentioning that this is probably similar to what the dinosaurs would have said ("Space-based defensive platforms? Really? You know, it's been 4.5 billion years and the sky hasn't fallen so far."), does Hannity perhaps not realize that bees produce the lion's share of our food?

I could take it - to an extent - when he criticized the bear money. Ok, fine. Bears: not that economy-related. They're off the grid. Beavers? Beaver dams flood things. This costs us cash in the long run. But don't control them; everyone loves wetlands anyway. Whatever. Then he was on the catfish research money. Hannity doesn't seem to know that catfish is the #1 fish consumed in the US. Fine. We'll let that go. But now the bees? Dumbass, they feed you. You should be pouring every fucking dollar you can into finding out if they're dying off, and why.

    Fucking, fucking, fucking idiot.

Fuck you, Hannity. Fuck you and the horse you rode in on. You blow things out of proportion about half the time; I was prepared to semi-agree with some of your points the other half, but now fuck you.

And Beck is at least partially insane.

Rush too? I had assumed these performers were all the bees knees to you, back when the war drums were beating loudest and you were jamming to them. None of these propagandists want to acknowledge, much less investigate Colony Collapse Disorder, be it ours or the bees'.

Hey! I was discussing colony collapse in another thread a few weeks ago. Well, I mentioned it at least.

    Hannity's dumb. Nuff said.

Whatever happened to the waterboarding challenge? Did he chickenhawk out at the last second?

And any higher-learning degree he has is probably honorary. Or from a diploma mill.

Okay, sorry. That was sooo uncalled for.

Is that really what you think about my position? It's sad that this is what passes for discourse these days.

    This is true.

GeoffP: "Is that really what you think about my position?"

    Ignorance is Blix.

Here's what I used to think: "GeoffP's muckraking is an example of contemporary incitement of culture-war that is resulting in so much death, grief, and obsession with revenge. This will continue until majorities everywhere cease grooving to this inane, belligerent drumbeat.

Like people everywhere, the overwhelming majority of Muslims are moderate and tolerant of other creeds and cultures. The sooner culture-combattants such as GeoffP are discredited on all sides, the sooner calm, reforms and coexistence will advance. Alternatively, should this kind of enmity and cultural supremacism be allowed to take greater hold, things will get much worse.

GeoffP is picking a fight with his extremist counterparts that nobody can win... He's so obsessed with this fight as to respond to examples of reality (like any radical) with denial... Because this information does not fit in with his world-view, GeoffP will dismiss it, in favor of his simplistic view that Islamism is the great bogeyman we must all confront lest it overtake us. In other words, GeoffP is sold on a warmed-over Red Scare with a new facade."

Now I'm not as certain, because you're turning on the leading contemporary culture-war salesmen. I realize it was only your empathy and understanding for bees that brought your epiphany and yet I have high hopes for the blossoming of your empathy for humans. Palestinians, even

All rightie, there are a couple of problems with your stance that we can sort right off the top.

First: Hansie Blix. I never really believed his assessments of Iran's interest or not-interest in nuclear weapons, and in fact the more recent appointee - a Syrian no less, as I recall - now tends to agree with me. Kudos for him. However - and I hate pointing this out - nuclear weapons in Iran is not the same as the invasion of Iraq. These are, I regret to have to inform you, different nations.

Nor have even I opined that military action should even be taken against Iran! So which tunes is it I'm "jamming" to again?

I think you may be stuck on the oldies station.

As for the other...ok, I'm at a loss here as to what your point is. Apparently I hate muslims (??) and this, then, is what my purportedly unreserved, uncritical support for military intervention in Iraq is based on? That it would kill muslims, perhaps? Forgive me if I must correct you on this matter, but you seem to have lost your sensibilities. None of your accusations are true. I have stated a variety of reasons for being for and against such action, and qualified blanket statements by those opposing and supporting it.

As to islamic culture: I would be happy to agree with your statements, if only they related to the present day, or to tolerance. You seem not really to understand that small groups, not even significant minorities of opinion, can drive intolerance. Illustrate to me in which islamic country minority religions are not oppressed to one degree or another, and I should be happy to take your dissembling as relevant to the discussion. Or, in other words: it doesn't matter that the majority (and what % is "overwhelming" to hype?) of muslims are "moderate and tolerant of other creeds and cultures". The islamic state - and its loyalists - are not, to varying degrees in different islamic nations. Of course, I understand that you have no interest in this fact whatsoever, and that you appear to be unable to separate criticism of systems from criticism of their believers. No one should really be surprised, I suppose.

But it was amusing to see you call me an ideologue, however.

Oh, and by-the-by: as a communist, your incomprehension of the conflict between East and West offends me. You will perhaps recall that both sides of the Cold War actively advanced their interests at the expense of satellite countries, and not just the one. This is particularly abhorrent, since the Soviet system was a corruption of the dialectic.

Also, you presented no real information. But that is a sideline.

    Yes. Unfortunately.

He's one of those talking heads that has an opinion on everything and attempts to posit his insane worldview as fact.

hannity is like a person on Fox New/AKA Faux News radio and TV. He is also a drop-out like glen beck and limbaugh.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sean_Hannity

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rush_Limbaugh
    limbaugh's mother, "He flunked everything"

And now limbaugh is the intellectual voice of the Republican Party.

I think that explains a lot.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glenn_Beck

I listened watched him the other day on TV he was running through his list of so called pork in the Stimulus Bill and I was amazed at the stuff he was representing as pork. In particular he represented the repainting of bridges as pork. I don't see how bridge maintanence and painting is pork. My God, it was just a few years ago that we had a major bridge collapse because of adequate maintenance...several people lost their lives.

Bridge maintenance is much needed in the US and I just don't see how anyone can make a legitimate claim that it is pork. It is not like the Republican bridge to no where in Alaska.

Regrettably, there's little funny about it. But that's the modern era.

I do enjoy your new content-based format. It's remarkably similar to the old format.

Your rage burns like an incandescent fire because you let your emotions cloud your reasoning. I think he's a nice guy, he just gives his opinions, nothing more.

My rage burns because of his foolishness. He's attacking stimuli that might actually stimulate along with the stimuli which will clearly not stimulate. Stimulating.

Remember when the governor of Louisiana came out against "something called 'volcano monitoring' <derisively shakes head>"?

    Specifically:

I remember thinking that that sounded like a common sense program. The only think I could imagine was that he forgot there were volcanoes in the U.S....either that or, since there are none in Louisiana, he doesn't care.

So what if a volcano wipes our Seattle or the Yellow Stone volcano blows...it's only a few million lives at state?
