Ladies and gentlemen, allow me, please, the honor of presenting our next spotlight member, Lucysnow. A six-year veteran of the Flame Wars, Lucy is one of my favorite rivalries. A Saggitarius, Ms. Lucy is the sort of member who can drive me pleasantly insane. We're often misunderstanding one another, but that's apparently okay because we're also willing to fight like cats from Kilkenny, and I think if the rules still allowed, she could teach many of her fellow members a thing or two about rhetorical brutality.

I see her in the context of fascinating contradictions, as she can regularly surprise me not only by taking the road less traveled, but also in simultaneously disdaining and celebrating the terrain that makes that path unattractive. Though I frequently disagree with her opinions on a wide range of issues, she has my utmost respect for her determination, intelligence, strength, and ability to (rhetorically) take a punch.

It is my pleasure as well as privilege to open this, the twenty-ninth round of "About The Members", and introduce Lucysnow.

    • How did you find Sciforums, and what compelled you to stay?
    • What behavior among your fellow members irritates or angers you?
    • Does any such behavior actually discourage you?
    • Pop music: Collection of singles, or concept albums?
    • What is your favorite musical recording in single or album form?
    • What is your favorite book?
    • Do you have a preferred literary genre?
    • Do you perceive any obligations individuals have toward one another in human societies?
    • Do you cook, and have you a favorite dish to prepare?
    • Do you believe there is a purpose (meaning) of life?

Our many thanks, in advance, for your willingness to undertake this exhibition. It is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks Tiassa for the introduction.

    • How did you find Sciforums, and what compelled you to stay?

Well I discovered Sciforums purely by accident. I was still living in NY at the time and was going through what I will call a kind of existential crises. Out of sorts with myself I would surf the net looking for, I don't know, something of philosophical value perhaps and discovered a link to sciforums. I cannot remember the thread topic but I do remember that the discussion was quite invigorating so I joined.

    • What behavior among your fellow members irritates or angers you?

Interesting question. I think when it comes to issues in which I have a deep interest or have been ruminating over to better understand why I think or feel the way I do, it is frustrating to have an apathetic poster who either feels no passion for the topic or discussion. I am quite irritated at times when it seems someone has missed the point of a discussion and insists on embarking on some inane meandering as if they are in a world of their own, I am not referring to tangents and digressions which are a natural part of any discussion. Being misconstrued or unfairly labeled can really test my patience, deliberate attempts to derail a discussion and straw man tactics, I find these quite infuriating.

    • Does any such behavior actually discourage you?

Sometimes. It can lead to a kind of boredom with the site if it happens too often. I either fight through it becoming more belligerent as the discussion continues or I simply abandon the thread.

    What is your favorite book?

Hmm. I am not sure if I really have one. There are a few novels that have been quite meaningful in my life. I would probably count Anais Nin’s Diaries as particularly influential. I am awed the beauty of her prose. I recall Knut Hamsun’s ‘Hunger’ being a powerful read, a writer’s novel. Strangely enough I can read Lewis Carrol’s ‘Alice In Wonderful’ over and over again without it seeming trite or childish. I love the character of Alice.

    • Pop music: Collection of singles, or concept albums?

Hmm. I don’t really have any pop music. I have a collection of the Beatles but I am not sure if its classified as pop. I remember when John Lennon died and I was watching the news having no clue who he was so I innocently asked my mother ‘What’s a Beatle?’
She was mortified. I am not sure if this was due to my complete ignorance or because she had neglected to tell me she named me after one of their songs. I go through phases with music, sometimes opting for anything devoid of words like Glenn Gould playing Bach. I enjoy everything from Miriam Makeba to Nirvana...go figure. PJ Harvey, Ani Difranco, Nina Simone, Marylin Manson, its all dependent on my state of mind. I also go through periods where I cannot bear to listen to any music at all.

    • What is your favorite musical recording in single or album form?

    Yoshikazu Mera’s ‘Mother’s Songs’
    Damien Rice O

Do you have a preferred literary genre?

No. I can appreciate all forms of literature. I am less moved by poetry than prose but prefer poetic prose to stiff intellectually dry narratives. I expect fire in a literary work. I admire the bold fearless narratives from the likes of Henry Miller.

    • Do you perceive any obligations individuals have toward one another in human societies?

Yes. I can be much of the hermit at times but I do believe in community. I believe we are obligated to help each other through this difficult journey of life as teachers, supporters, sometimes as deliverers of admonishments. We have to be discriminating with whom we draw into our circle and are responsible for the quality of the society we live in and the standards or lack of standards that are set in our communities. I am speaking of the communities we engage with in life and that includes sciforums. I do not believe people grow or succeed in a vacuum.

    • Do you cook, and have you a favorite dish to prepare?

Hell no. I am no cook but can throw together a healthy dish but I rarely do so. I like making soup and salads which are easy. I figure as long as there are restaurants and delivery service I won’t starve.

    • Do you believe there is a purpose (meaning) of life?

No. I do not think there is any purpose or meaning save what we impose on life. We have to discover for ourselves what our purpose is as individuals and what obligations we choose to engage ourselves in vis a vis society. I think we have to create meaning.

Dr Suess 'Oh The Places You'll Go'

I have no pet name for my mother.

I think its unfair to push an interest on students or people. Everyone has the right to focus on what they feel passionate about. A well rounded person would tend to learn all of these things to varying degrees. For myself it would be culture, history and some science.

Hobbies? I'm like to collect rare books and also curios objects from my travels, antiques and original artworks by living artists though I do have my share of reproductions.

Slap anyone? No. I did bite an ex boyfriend on the chest once out of pure exasperation

Not my finest moment but if its any indication it was the second time in a week he had been bitten by a human being.

Yes I have facilitated English conversation in China as well as teaching English lit.

I love snow. I have loved the moments in my life where I was in nature surrounded by fresh white snow. I love tree branches crystalized with icicles, they look like living chandeliers.

Can you summarize your experience on sciforums with 10 words or less?

If you could visit any one single place right now, where would that place be?

What kind of red wine is your favourite?

Name one thing about yourself that no one else knows about you, but you fancy about yourself.

    ---

Who is your favourite character in 'Alice in Wonderland' or 'Through the Looking Glass'?

Which character do you identify with most?

    ---

You are sitting under a tree in a beautiful park, the sun is warm, the air is warm, the wind is gentle but not breezy. A soft brook bubbles gently nearby just close enough for you to hear but not close enough to distract you. The songbirds are quitely singing their songs, and the leaves rustle gently above.

What one book do you have with you?

It's a place where you can meet cheshire cats.

I would return to Prague or visit my oldest friend in Copenhagen.

    Cabernet and Shiraz.

Please re-phrase the question as I am not sure what you mean.

    Cheshire Cat. Alice.

Under the scenario you describe I wouldn't be reading I would be musing.

child·like qualities and I do not mean childishness.

Hmm, with what you described I would probably be constructing the perfect house, cottages and garden that will go on my property. I would then wonder about the people it would attract.
