or they will grow up thinking that people come in all shapes and sizes. Most of the "he will scare the kids" actually doesnt COME from children. The kid at school who suffered, i cant rember what it was but it left him physically stiff and needing cruches and also mentally handicaped. He was the most popular kid at school ESPECIALLY with the girls

    Finally some common sense.

I was probably taking this a tad personally because of my own issues facing government organisations and school funding and other crap which has no meaning. But really it doesn't matter what matters is that each child, no matter what their learning needs gets what they need.

Somewhat idealistic probably, but worth working towards.

No you are being knee jerk and thinking this is what I am suggesting or what the thread starter is suggesting. I went to school with someone who was deaf, she had friends, participated in class and extra curricula activity, was intelligent and got good grades, the fact that she was deaf did not impede her ability to learn nor to participate. But if she were deaf and had a learning disability coupled with behaviour problems then yes it would have been better if she were placed in a special needs class.

Unfortunately children don't always think like that. I remember i used to have a friend who thought disabilities were contagious until she met me and overcame a fear of disabled people. Unfortunately it doesn't always happen like that. Some children hold onto their fear of different

You said that if a person could not hear what was being said they should be in a special needs class. Have you ever been to a special needs class? They teach basic math its a goddamn insult to be told I should go to special needs coz the teacher speaks with his back to the class.

Go back and find the post where that was said, I said no such thing. No I have no behaviour or learning disability to warrant a special needs class which is the point here, not barring someone based on hearing or not hearing barring someone based on whether they can participate or not.

not really or at least it SHOULDNT be if the goverment put enough money into disability services. My sister actually WORKS for disability services in WA. She is a physio who goes into schools to make sure that they have the arrangements in place for her clients, she works with her clients (these are all chronic pts not acute) to make sure they can funtion to there potentual. She is also part of a team with psycologists, ocupational theorpists ect ect so that her clients get the surport they need.

Yes at that time and place i believe that she benefited from growing an understanding that disabled people are in fact that; people. They are just not as able.

I have met many people with many disabilities over my short life. One a girl with a paralysed arm and a bit slow (she didn't have any particular learning disability that i recall she just didn't pick things up that quickly) was part of a LSC (learning support centre) which was part of the mainstream school. She became so used to being a part of that centre that she refused to hang out outside of it in the mainstream school even though she was a great person to be around she felt like people that were thought of as mainstream didn't or wouldn't like her because of her disability.

If anything this is what separating smart/average/dumb does.

yes there are people who need certain support to be able to learn. I need my implant and sometimes an aid. People with behavioural issues: tourettes, adhd, add, autism etc are sometimes able to cope with mainstream other times they are not. It all comes down to what Asguard said before that what a child gets should be based on that child and their needs not on the bigoted opinions of people such as the thread starter.

Perhaps bigoted wasn't the best term. More ignorant with his use of politically incorrect terms.

Its like you look at the thread, read it and didn't read the words nor understood the meaning. Which I guess is why you have accused me of saying this

"You said that if a person could not hear what was being said they should be in a special needs class. Have you ever been to a special needs class? They teach basic math its a goddamn insult to be told I should go to special needs coz the teacher speaks with his back to the class."

And not post proof when I ask you to since I have said no such thing. Sorry if you are hypersensitive towards your disability but that's no reason to call someone a bigot or to lie about what they say just because your reading comprehension is a little off and you don't understand the difference between a disabled person and a disabled person who has learning disabilities and behaviour problems.

Carry on with the hysterical rant. I do believe in integration which is why I don't mind saying that even a disabled person can prove themselves an asshole.

No as I recall you said a child who is getting left behind because of hearing or behavioural disabilities need a special class.

Does this apply to people who are having a hard time at school due to personal issues or do they simply need counsilling and more time and attentiong from their teacher?

Plus I also stated that bigot was perhaps not the best term.

Don't recall show me the post. You don't have a hearing problem you have a reading comprehension problem. Go back and show me the post were I said 'hearing and behaviour problems'. I have said children with 'learning and behaviour problems' need a special class, I said that if a child is retarded and cannot keep up they need a special class, I said that if a child is retarded and is disturbing the class due to behaviour they need a special class.

I can tell you don't take the time to read all the posts do you or you wouldn't have to ask questions to which I addressed in the very first post.
A child who is disturbing the class and needs more attention than an entire classroom of students should be removed from the class and receive the help it needs, the needs of the majority of students far exceeds the need of one student who requires special attention.

    GOT IT NOW?

Because it's the law of the land in the US.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Individuals_with_Disabilities_Education_Act

from my experience mainstreaming my daughter into regular educations classes, with accommodations that are specific to her learning disability has been hard, but definitely worth it.

When she was in special day classes, she was "forgotten" to be invited to class parties, field trips and plays because her class was in a portable on the edge of the campus. No amount of ranting and raving by me to the school administration can undo the terrible hurt she experienced.

Since being mainstreamed into regular classes, with accommodations, she is with the student population, attends all school events, and feels a part of her school community. She also has more friends.

IMO - I feel problems occur when teachers don't have the training or patience to implement accommodations to special needs children in a regular classroom or the school district doesn't have the money to hire teacher aides to assist in classrooms.

Last year my daughter took Earth Science, pre-algebra, College prep English, US history, in a regular classroom setting with accommodations specific to her specific learning disability as outlined in her IEP.

The year before that, she was in a special day class at the same school. She was doing 3rd grade math, in English they were doing crossword puzzles, almost every child in the class had behavior problems, and she never had homework.

I'll never forget the day she came home from school last year and showed me her books. She said, Look Mom, I finally have real books. I almost cried.

it was only when asguard said it i realised i don't distinguish between the two. just kidding, i find that really useful too, for showing people (sometimes myself) when they're being bigoted/prejudiced etc.

first of all its called, mentally challenged,

and perhaps this child is scaring the the otehr kids because they dont understand him/her, sending him away to a specialisted school will not help him learn, perhaps he has mental conditions that will be better treated in a main stream school?

and the disadvangtages about sending a child to school where there are other kids like him is, THEY ARE ALL LIKE HIM!! every child either born in UK usa or anywhere deserves the best education ragardless of anything that may or may not be wrong with him,

perhaps he does know exactly what the teacher is saying, and learns well in main stream school he should not be forced into a specialised school, and besides its up to teh perants where THEY'RE child goes and not a group of misunderstanding perants at the school. perhaps if the mums and dads of the other kids actually met with the childs perants thinsg would be differant, and they wqould understand him,

i ahve made no secret that my son has severe ADHD and learning difficulties, and many mums and dads wanted him out of the school because of his bizzare behaviour, and they wanted to force me to send my son to a special school and after a long hard battle against the school and the education authority here, he is still in main stream school and doing very VERY well., because he is in the place that he needs to be in, and i wont have a group of small minded idiots tell me otherwise
