    Authoritarian bullshit.

I have lots of activites that I've gotten good at, and I wasn't forced to do those. When something was my own idea I was really passionate about it and would happily practice for hours, but the minute someone else put pressure on me to do something it became an 'invasion' and I refused to do it anymore.

And 'sleeping till noon' actually has a function. At that age you're still growing, and your neural circuits are still rewiring. You need that sleep. Seeing it as self indulgent laziness is just self righteous crap.

I think the exercise and camaraderie from participating in some kind of sport is important. I wouldn't force the kid to play basketball, but he'd need to be in some sport. My oldest son, for instance, could have been a great basketball player. He's very tall, fast, and atheletic. But he hates it because of an early negative experience.

When he first went out for basketball (in 3rd grade) we lived in an all white town surrounded by a bunch of black towns. Now call me racist if you want, but these 3rd grade white kids could barely even dribble, let alone shoot. Few of them had ever even played basketball before, but the black kids they played against were making three pointers and dribbling like pros! Every game was literally a 40+ point blowout. The result? My oldest son hates basketball with a passion. Who wouldn't? It's no fun being humiliated every game.

But he did well in football, baseball, wrestling, and best of all in track. Still, as the high school basketball coach said trying to convince him to go out for the team, "We can teach you how to play, but we can't teach you to be tall!" Nevertheless, so long as he was involved in something, we were fine with him not playing basketball.

Like I said, if we'd allowed him to do only what he wanted, he'd have spent all his time sleeping and playing video games.

MAW, that story has nothing to do with race. I don't think you meant it to be, "All blacks are good at basketball!", but it's coming off that way. Also, not playing sports doesn't exactly mean you're doomed to be a street urchin.

My dad said the same thing, sports, sports, sports. However I think if your child is bad at something (like all things athletic) it's cruel to force them to keep playing. This kid I played with is obviously an adult now, who still sucks at anything athletic but his drawings and graphic designs are still amazing. After his parents got divorced he dropped basketball faster than a hot potato. And his mother got him involved with an art for kids program. I believe kids should enjoy their hobbies and extracurricular activities.

I still disagree with forcing someone to take up an activity. They should be able to pick something they enjoy, not be forced to do what your parents want. When it's forced you get nothing out of it, you just spend all your time wanting to do something else.

Women are afraid to be on their own. Usually, they hang out at the minimum in twos especially when outside.

With the advent of cell phones there seems to be a bold step of women going out on there own.

I guess rape is always on their mind.

Men are free from having a sense of vulnerability.

I'm not afraid to be on my own. I'm not a loner, but I'm not hyper social either.

I think it's more to do with feeling vulnerable. I hate being around a lot of men unless they're obviously my own kind, like other mountain bikers or other metal heads. I feel very aware that I'm small and relatively weak, and can be raped.

yep, I was raised to view every man as a potential rapist. And it wasn't taught to me by my Mom, but by my dad.

I love being on my own. If I want to do something and no one else wants to go, I'll go by myself. I walk through downtown Los Angeles all alone. I don't know what other women's problems are. If you spend your whole life worrying about what could happen, you'll never do anything.
