Didn't go, but did teach at. Can say. They often brainwash with a bit more panache, for whatever that is worth. Like they mean it.

Oh, didn't realize they were so concerned about under-age drinking.

Hello, that was a cheap joke.

Here was the post I responded to....

    You...
It seemed like a general question and you elided most of the context, specifically the issue about underage drinking.

So I thought it was a general question. May not have been what you intended, but hardly clear.

Some the rest of my post in answer to your question still holds just for the underage drinking issue.

    Respond, or not.

You'll have no friends. As everyone will be weary of what they even say jokingly around you, because well you're a snitch. And depending on the crew your tattling on, a shortened life. Just this morning the local snitch, snitched on the wrong people and was found beaten to death.

Nobody likes a snitch. I wouldn't encourage anyone to make it their known reputation.

There is a difference between reporting something of actual consequence, like people beating some one to death, and trying to encourge a culture of people ratting each other out over trivial matters, like smoking a J behind the school.

A good rule of thumb would be "is some one getting hurt?"

well if its not anonymous (like crimestoppers) then I don't see kids doing it.

It can't be if they are getting paid for it. And besides all it takes is one big mouthed friend or another snitch to rat you out. You'll be hard pressed to live that down. And I doubt if you called on a group of kids you go to school with they probably aren't just going to forgive you.

I live in the area where they're doing this. I'd be tempted to take up on the offer, but I'd report what I think should be reported even if there wasn't a reward for it.

I always report what I think should be reported. While annoying, a bunch of guys smoking pot downstairs isn't really worth it. But I guess we all have different thresholds.

My daughter is always tattling on someone to me. After awhile, I tune it out.

Offering $$ is going to create an atmosphere of increased snitching.

I think it's going to create a lot more work for the police dept to filter out all the crap.

is it going to create a culture without trust or loyalty? or in that high risk environment will loyalty be prized? strong seas make skillful sailors?

Excellent point. I would also add....

is there perhaps a better way to confront the issue than sending secret messages to the police?

I think sometimes my answer would be 'no',

but in other cases, I think the answer might be yes.

    Perhaps a lot of cases.

Police departments could try to add to these other routes and save themselves from having to deal with a lot of trivial crap.

that's so ridiculous, wasting valuable police time. this is exactly why as soon as i have kids i'm getting a private security force.

    This strengthens order in society.

I would appreciate as much order as possible in my society if I didn't want to see it burn for the embarrassment it is.

Too much order = too little progress and creativity
