'Wolverine' has box-office bite with $35M debut
    May 2, 2009, 12:01 PM EST
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Going solo has paid off for Hugh Jackman and his "X-Men" spinoff.

Jackman's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" kicked off the summer movie season with a howl by taking in $35 million on its opening day Friday.

According to Hollywood.com box-office analyst Paul Dergarabedian, that puts "Wolverine" solidly in line with the three previous "X-Men" movies in which Jackman costarred.

The final chapter of that trilogy, "X-Men: The Last Stand," was the most successful with $45.1 million on opening day.

But "Wolverine" outdid the first two movies. "X-Men" had an opening day of $20.8 million, while "X2: X-Men United" did $31.2 million on its first day.

I'm surprised it did so well given the unofficial online release a month ago. I guess online thieves don't always take that big a bite.

It was just as good as the other X men, I think. I don't really get why anyone is surprised. Not like it has that much competition either. I guess until this coming Friday, with Star Trek.

I very rarely go to see movies, and Bob Mondello's review of this one last Friday on NPR pretty well cured me of making an exception this weekend.

On the bright side, all of the reviews I've seen for Star Trek have been good.

Since when you started to care about box office and since when it is a reliable measurement of a film's quality??

Sorry, but I missed the memo...

For String: Next time check out the movie online first (at least the first 10 mins) and you can safe yourself the trouble...

I saw some of this online, lolz it had the unrendered scenes still in for the flying plane to the islands, etc. I was laughing my ass off when Wolverine gets thrown in front of a truck and it cuts to a unrendered CGI thing haha

I just wanted to show how well this movie was doing even though it was available by downloading it for free on the net. I think that the free downloading doesn't impact those wanting to see this movie at the local theaters that much and this shows I'm right.

It may be available for free on the net (in an unfinished form) but what movie goer really has the inclination to download a shitty version of a film they were looking forward to watching at the cinema or on DVD?
Just shows that perhaps the extra publicity due to the leak helped the box office for Wolverine??

It might be crap, but I'm glad piracy didn't hurt it.

To me, it was better than Star Trek. They did a good job of showing us his past and a good script as well.

    Just saw it.

can someone explain to me when he became Logan? And why all of a sudden his girlfriend is calling him that instead of James?

And the beginning. What the heck was that all about? Was he kidnapped as a child?

I missed the switch-over in the movie, but the Origins comic book he took the name Logan as a pseudonym (and penance) after going on the run.

I read it (from the comic and film) as Howlett's wife having been unfaithful with Sabretooth's father.
Although it does[ get slightly convoluted because, after both losing their memories due to Weapon X re-programming Sabretooth spends a long time thinking he's Wolverine's father (in the comics) and it's later shown from DNA tests that Sabretooth and Wolverine aren't related at all. (Nick Fury/ SHIELD ran a test after rescuing Wolverine at the end of the Elsie Dee story line).
