and then you get viruses, yaaaay! If it makes you feel any better GUI password prompts come up when doing administrative tasks in via point and click, you can set your user account as the root user (not recommended) to get around sudo and the password prompts, but then you open your self to tasks installing or doing questionable operations without your direct consent.

Purposely skipping the jibes, because they are useless in a forum debate

Listen...it is a matter of written fact that Linux on the desktop is a mere drop in the bucket compared to Windows. Of course (like I said) Linux/Unix etc dominate in specialized server applications. But we were addressing the desktop space here.

I should have left this out. However, I usually find that "apt get" tends to get the job done...more on this later.

NO. The Network Manager does not work consistently over various distributions! I've even come across one where the Network Manager GUI module failed completely. Indeed it even conflicted with the command line! We (in the office) had to remove the module and edit the interfaces file as was the "old", "inconvenient" way. It's 2009. Consumers should not have to do this on a desktop!

No. A media center is capable of executing all user requests for media. Be it pictures, video, music, tv, radio. Dependant of course on the hardware available; however the OUTPUT (that which the user consumes) is what defines a media center.

    - What's the price for the TIVO box? A TIVO subscription?
    - Did YOU have to code the OS on the TIVO box?

TiVo may have acquired the OS for free, but their developers created the software necessary, and the consumer (who didn't install/code anything) pays for both the box and sometimes even for monthly service.

And again you simply prove my point. Why would a user WANT to develop TiVo from scratch when TiVo simply WORKS! There is no user interaction required.

Were a user to wish to build his own media center, Windows simply makes it easier. Trust me, I've tried it on both platforms.

No. Microsoft's knowledge base in most circumstances allows the user to circumvent forums. Most recently I've even solved a server problem in five minutes (i didn't pull the number from thin air). One of my staff noted a recurring error on one of our Windows Servers. I looked up the error code on the knowledge base and instituted the fix.

By the way...the 5 mins included the time it took to walk back to my desk.

Further, any old gruff developer IS NOT AVAILABLE for every single consumer!

OpenOffice is also available for Windows. Gimp is also available for Windows. There are vast armies of freeware programs available for Windows. This is a non argument. You are only considering the Windows acquisition cost.

    Indeed I do.

I did know about the add/remove apps program. It sucks. Everything that requires configuration/installation, trust me...command line is better. But this is not suitable for the majority of non-technical consumers.

Aesthetics are very important to the general user. Why waste 10 days mucking around trying to get Linux to look nice, when Windows already accomplishes that?

Vista works. It was annoying at first, mainly because of the removal of legacy software support. Of course no one notices when software versions become incompatible with Linux OS versions, because it's par for the course - expected even.

The first time I tried Ubuntu, it locked my system trying to boot to the Live image. As always I remained open minded, and still suggested my techs try it at the office. A couple of non-critical applications currently work on Linux servers, however, each of them could have been deployed in less than half the time, had we simply gotten a Windows equivalent. Given these challenges, there is no justification against HelpDesk and migration costs to even consider Linux on the desktop.

My point is (again), you are on a Linux fanboy bandwagon. You do not get that the desktop market is dominated by Windows since Linux is not as simple as you find it to be, neither does it cover all tasks for all people (media center/gaming/fully functional office).

Thing is, you don't seem to realise that you are on a bandwagon, and blindly downcry Windows simply because it hasn't worked for you...in the 1% of the Linux desktop market.

Virus infections are the product of non-vigilance. Information is the solution, not migration.

    But that make it fun!

I never said it wasn't, we were not talking about popularity were we?

The OP was asking about ubuntu, I'm talking about ubuntu, not ever flavor of linux out there! I'm sure if you got fucked-in-the-ass linux you would get fuck in the ass!

That can be accomplished with linux, of course with the right hardware (TV tunner, All-in-wonder, etc)... without resorting the command lines.

Because it COST MONEY! which is why mythtv, my TV, etc exist. Might as well ask why would anyone want to make a computer, install windows media edition, get all the drivers install, when they could just get a DVR (like TiVo) plug it in and it "just works".

Why should I? You honestly don't no much about Linux, specifically Ubuntu.

Ubuntu comes with a "help center"/"knowledge base" for searching for answers to problems offline.

By the nature of your claims YOU ARE an old gruff developer (well server manger or what ever it is you claim), hence when you say "well I can do X in 5 minutes in windows" it has no relevance to the majority of consumers can do. You can't honestly expect people to know how to fuck with machines like you do?

Yes but does windows come with an app. pre-install that allows you to search a huge list of freeware apps and download and install them with one click?

What are you talking about? There is no configuration required, you click the mouse a couple of times, boom its install and working!

First of all XP was nothing compared to Beryl aesthetically, second Beryl comes pre-install, In ubuntu 8.10 or greater click on System>Preferences>Appearance>Visual Effects, it does not take 10 fucking days to click the mouse 5 times!

And how it sucks ungodly amounts of RAM? And butchers anything that not state of the art?

You and your staff know how to run with windows, changing now would be to hard, your stuck sucking microsofts cock forever and ever, unless by some miracle everyone moves to another operating system. My step father had a simliar problem until he could not pay for embedded system OS, and tried uclinux, the man is old enough to remember unix commands but decades of buying Microsoft developers packages (hence how I got all my Windows OS and even got to try them out as betas) for all his developers tools had made him forgetful, but despite this fact he work at it and become so enthralled he cancel his subscription to Microsoft, which is a shame as I wanted to try Win7, and sure ad hell am not going to pay for it!

No, you do not get that everyone is stuck with windows because that what they have been using and are familiar with, few have ever even heard of linux!

Yep, linux covers those task (or at least to my knowledge Ubuntu and Debian do), and can do so without the need for terminal commands or hand built scrips!

It worked fine for me (until vista) I just did not want to pay money for it. I have no problem with being a minority, what the majority want is not necessarily right, or hence and appeal to the majority fallacy.

Noob comments on a couple of things- The frequent permissions are a great education, and with a 1-character root password, I have a short 2-finger salute to acknowledge good advice with; the dialog enables faster learning. I see explicit permissions as a great asset.

Another thing that amazes me is how graphics effects like Beryl are so efficient. Doing anything comparable with Windows would soon bog everything down.

I like the invitation to dig in deep, and I like the eye-candy. Windows is just too taxing in both regards, and that's why I'm over it.

Freaking Ubuntu wouldn't even play a normal DVD, had to swich back to XP to be able to watch it.

...and that is today's bitching about Linux. As about how many more years needed, when it gets to be usable? Probably another 5....

It plays DVDs fine with me, what applications were you using, what was the DVD?

I been having problems with flash players until recently because the fuckers at adobe had not made a good 64bit version of flash player.

I just clicked on Play DVD, whatever application was built in and the DVD was original from the Library. XP played it fine...

I only use Ubuntu for fast websurfing, it is perfect for that, although the mouse behaves sometimes strange...
