    Cost for one.
Existing stockpiles for another - "Oh sorry, we can't go tank-killing 'cuz we used all the DU ammo shooting bimps and soft skins".
It's called tailoring - you choose the weapon to suit the intended target.
Straight from the manufacturer's data sheet.

No, you wouldn't... because that heavy armor peircing round will go in one side and out the other and 9 times out of 10 do nothing but scare the piss out of whoever is driving it...

Against a tank, it penetrates and BOUNCES around inside... it becomes a fucking meat grinder.

Against a HMMWV it'd blow clean thru in and out... an incendiary round would explode inside the HMMWV and kill the occupants and leave the vehicle useless...

As for surviving a .50 cal impact:

From a bullet fired into the air... terminal velocity impact by a .50 cal bullet and she definately survived...

Actually a dead culture built one millions of years prior top vulcan civilization. Considering that the Battle of Yavin was roughly 6.5 billion years BC and that ET and Episode One prove that Earth and Star Wars are in the same universe....Who knows.

Beisdes it's no what you could once build, it's what you can use now. You don;t see me calling on the Sith Lords who could call down Solar FLares or the Jedi who could time walk, so don't adding abilities that the galaxy once had but lost.

Actually yes, a 35lb cannon ball hitting any sort of breakable structure could conceivably cuase sharpnel. Also by definately it is a miss if you ht the ground first, even if the ball bounds up and strikes the target.

Honestly however it is the transference of energy that does the most damage. A 30mm AP round is going to just blow a holes right through your target. meanwhile the cannon ball is going to demolish your target.

Uhm, excuse me, but you didn't ask if we could build one now (which, using reverse engineering, we most likely could), but rather you claimed we couldn't do it at all...

You are the one that chose to argue semantics... pick your words wisely next time.

Yet that cannonball is going to bounce off a tank and make the crew inside laugh... that 30mm slug is going to penetrate and bounce inside, making the crew dead.

Bit of a difference there oh high and drunken one.

If a cannon ball hits the ground (depending upon the ground) it will either bounce away or sink in, rather than break up.
In fact cannon balls were often aimed to bounce into troop formations - which means that they were built NOT to break up.
A 30mm hole through the human body, with attendant wound size from tumbling and pressure waves is going to be pretty much lethal even if it misses a bone and the fuse doesn't go off.
A 30mm round with a near miss is going to cause overpressure as the HE goes off and flatten someone, even missing to one side (which would do nothing at all if it were a cannon ball).

hmmm i don't propose using Dison spheres in combat, after all, what are they good for anyways?
as for ET, SW and Earth being in the same universe, i say no problem. but it's not the same universe as ST. by that time Earth was under Eugenics in ST.

And another thing - who's to say the Q didn't build the dyson sphere?

    Scary thought...

Dude, it's not a single roudn, the gattling gun fires so fats that atleast 50 rounds would be fired for the first second of firing. Now if fifty rounds hits a humvee do you honestly think that humvee would be usable? probably 30 woud pierce the crew compartment killing everyone, 15 into the engine, and 5 anywhere else.

Yah but that bullet lost its vertical speed by a lot, and even then she barely survived the shot from a much slower moving projectile than it should have been.

"If 50 rounds hit a Humvee..."
Er you do know it sprays an area - not all rounds go in the same place.

Not so scary, since the Q would hold themselves above a human vs human conflict even if the Empire was Extra galactic. The Q had done nothing against other Extra galactic foes, such as the Andromedans in TOS.

Honestly though if the Q had built it and then abandoned it, it does show a limitation of power. As obviously they cannot stabilze and rejuvenate a star. and further more are threatened by the radiation for said unstable star. So it would be in your best interest if they had not built the sphere at all.

I recall the movie "Glory" potrayed the exact effect of canon balls, But I wouldn't expect a response from TWSCOTT.
I don't know why but he portrays himself as a student of science and that it's his proffession but he doesn't tend to use it in these discussions.

It places 80% of it's shots within a 40 foot circle from 1200 meters away, so that would probly be around 25-30 rounds hitting the humvee in the first of what would porbably be three seconds of firing. after that it would be around 50-60 rounds hitting the humvee for the next two seconds. How the hell will it survive?

Keep trying: the GAU-8 fires in half second or one second bursts, not 3 seconds at a time.
If the pilot pulls the trigger three times the aircraft will be off-target.
Or pointing down at a nasty angle...
And it still doesn't address the cost/ logistics problem.
You don't use DU against light/ unarmoured targets.
That's the reason WHY ATK (amongst others) developed HE/I rounds.

Actually, it would show an increase of power- they used it to stabilize a star, then abandoned it when they no longer needed it and had ascended beyond such petty needs.
