Besides the ethics, that is a very real problem. And it is happening as we speak.

P.S. I answered your earlier question on the previous page

    i stated:
    then you asked:
    and i stated:
i believe that is a direct answer to the question you asked.
it would also eliminate scenarios such as what the OP proposes.

Plants. Bioengineered plants like corn are cross-pollinating with the regular kinds.
I also started a thread some time ago about some bacteria that almost got out: http://www.sciforums.com/showthread.php?t=90046

No, somehow you're getting this backwards

You: "to be honest i believe all research into the human side of bioengineering should be tightly controlled".

Me: "Why only the human side ?"
As in, why should only the human side of bioengineering be tightly controlled, and not all other 'sides' ?

You: "do we really need to know what it would be like to have a human with 10 heads or 5 arms?

humanity also doesn't need a bunch of scientists pissing around in society's gene pool.
the industrial and agricultural side will provide plenty of area for science to flex its muscles without compromising the human side."

    See ?

The question is, if we start with neanderthals, where do we go next? Which species of prehuman do we clone after them? Besides, we don't have a really excellent record dealing people that have been considered subhuman, even (God knows) when they are fully Human--ask any survivor of Auchwitz what they think the chances are for a neanderthal to be treated normally in society.

This is true. But see my post (13), Neanderthals are humans by definition.

Why do you only want to tightly control bioengineering in humans and NOT in other organisms ?

Animals and plants are not just meat and well.. veggies. They are living things like you and me..
    We should show more respect.

Edit: I'm off.. my connection keeps breaking up.

How was I being disrespectful. I respect animals far more than you do. I eat very little factory raised meat.

the only thing i can say enmos is to read my post.

ah, i see, you got this "humans and animals are equals" thing going.

i can't answer your question enmos because anything i say you will immediately disagree with.

I didn't say you were disrespectful. I said that WE should show life more respect, meaning humans in general. And it was aimed at bioengineering.

I doubt you eat less 'factory raised' meat than I do, but that's beside the point
