Eve Of Destruction Artist Barry McGuire The eastern world, it is exploding Violence flarin’, bullets loadin’ You’re old enough to kill, but not for votin’ You don’t believe in war, but what’s that gun you’re totin’ And even the Jordan River has bodies floatin’ But you tell me Over and over and over again, my friend Ah, you don’t believe We’re on the eve of destruction. Don’t you understand what I’m tryin’ to say Can’t you feel the fears I’m feelin’ today? If the button is pushed, there’s no runnin’ away There’ll be no one to save, with the world in a grave [Take a look around ya boy, it's bound to scare ya boy] And you tell me Over and over and over again, my friend Ah, you don’t believe We’re on the eve of destruction. Yeah, my blood’s so mad feels like coagulatin’ I’m sitting here just contemplatin’ I can’t twist the truth, it knows no regulation. Handful of senators don’t pass legislation And marches alone can’t bring integration When human respect is disintegratin’ This whole crazy world is just too frustratin’ And you tell me Over and over and over again, my friend Ah, you don’t believe We’re on the eve of destruction. Think of all the hate there is in Red China Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama You may leave here for 4 days in space But when you return, it’s the same old place The poundin’ of the drums, the pride and disgrace You can bury your dead, but don’t leave a trace Hate your next-door neighbor, but don’t forget to say grace And… tell me over and over and over and over again, my friend You don’t believe We’re on the eve Of destruction Mm, no no, you don’t believe We’re on the eve of destruction. Lyin Eyes City girls just seem to find out early How to open doors with just a smile A rich old man And she won't have to worry She'll dress up all in lace and go in style Late at night a big old house gets lonely I guess every form of refuge has its price And it breaks her heart to think her love is Only given to a man with hands as cold as ice So she tells him she must go out for the evening To comfort an old friend who's feelin' down But he knows where she's goin' as she's leavin' She is headed for the cheatin' side of town You can't hide your lyin' eyes And your smile is a thin disguise I thought by now you'd realize There ain't no way to hide your lyin' eyes On the other side of town a boy is waiting with fiery eyes and dreams no one could steal She drives on through the night anticipating 'Cause he makes her feel the way she used to feel She rushes to his arms, they fall together She whispers that it's only for awhile She swears that soon she'll be comin' back forever She pulls away and leaves him with a smile You can't hide your lyin' eyes And your smile is a thin disguise I thought by now you'd realize There ain't no way to hide your lyin' eyes She gets up and pours herself a strong one And stares out at the stars up in the sky Another night, it's gonna be a long one She draws the shade and hangs her head to cry She wonders how it ever got this crazy She thinks about a boy she knew in school Did she get tired or did she just get lazy? She's so far gone she feels just like a fool My, oh my, you sure know how to arrange things You set it up so well, so carefully Ain't it funny how your new life didn't change things You're still the same old girl you used to be You can't hide your lyin eyes And your smile is a thin disguise I thought by now you'd realize There ain't no way to hide your lyin' eyes There ain't no way to hide your lyin' eyes Honey, you can't hide your lyin' eyes
He takes me everywhere he goes. And he goes everywhere! He likes to try on all my clothes. But not my underwear! Yeah, he really loves me, "Sweetheart's" and "Turtle Dove's" me. Now I know the secrets of the world. I am the girl, and he is the guy. I never thought I could be simple and wise. Surprise surprise-- He opened up my eyes. I understand everything, And now I can die. "Now I Can Die" by Nina Gordon, formerly half of Veruca Salt
A door left open A woman walking by A drop in the water A look in the eye A phone on the table A man on your side Oh, someone that you think that you can trust Is just Another way to die - Alicia Keys & Jack White- Another way to die
Farewell Angelina words by Bob Dylan sung by Joan Baez Farewell Angelina the bells on the crown Are being stolen by bandits I must follow the sound The triangle tingles And the music plays slow But farewell Angelina The night is on fire And I must go There is use in talking And there's no need for blame There is nothing to prove Everything still is the same A table stands empty By the edge of the stream But farewell Angelina The sky is changing colors And I must leave The jacks and the queens They foresake the courtyard Fifty-two gypsies Now file past the guard In the space where the deuce And the ace once ran wild Farewell Angelina The sky is folding I'll see you after a while See the crosseyed pirates Sit perched in the sun Shooting tin cans With a sawed off shot gun And the corporals and the neighbors Clap and cheer with each blast But farewell Angelina The sky is trembling And I must leave fast King Kong, little elves And the roof-tops they dance Valentino-type tangos While the heroes clean hands Shut the eyes of the dead Not to embarass anyone Farewell Angelina The sky is flooding over and I must be gone [Harmonica break] The camoflaged parrot He flutters from fear When something he doesn't know about Suddenly appears What cannot be imitated Perfect must die Farewell Angelina The sky is flooding over And I must go where it is dry Machine guns are roaring The puppets heave rocks At misunderstood visions And at the faces of clocks Call me any name you like I will never deny it But farewell Angelina The sky is errupting And I must go where it is quiet http://www.google.com/url?sa=U&star...s63tBg&usg=AFQjCNG4Pgvmq28cuN61B1ycLh9aiLIlgw
I must have been through about a million girls I'd love 'em and I'd leave 'em alone I didn't care how much they cried, no sir Their tears left me cold as a stone But then I fooled around and fell in love I fooled around and fell in love Since I met you baby I fooled around and fell in love... "Bald" It would appear that male pattern baldness has set in his hair, at an alarming pace running away from his face he's losing his virility and now his masculinity has been compromised and his libido down-sized Not for me, not for me, not for me, uh-uh not for me, not for me, heaven forbid it's not for me you understand Bald, slap headed and hairless bald he is destined to be bald, well tonight thank God it's him instead of me. From what I have been reading his scalp needs kneading to stimulate each follicle and reverse this diabolical condition that's afflicted he for years and has cruelly repulsed each potential mate and left him with a balding pate Not for me, not for me, not for me, uh-uh not for me, not for me, heaven forbid it's not for me you understand Bald, slap headed and hairless bald he is destined to be bald, well tonight thank God it's him instead of me. Sock it to me baby, yeah! Not for me, not for me, not for me, uh-uh not for me, not for me, heaven forbid it's not for me you understand Not for me, not for me, not for me, uh-uh not for me, not for me, heaven forbid it's not for me you understand Bald, slap headed and hairless bald he is destined to be bald, well tonight thank God it's him instead of me. Thank God! Bald, slap headed and hairless bald he is destined to be bald, well tonight thank God it's him instead of me. How?

Isn't it rich? Are we a pair? Me here at last on the ground, You in mid-air.. Where are the clowns? Isn't it bliss? Don't you approve? One who keeps tearing around, One who can't move... Where are the clowns? Send in the clowns. Just when I'd stopped opening doors, Finally knowing the one that I wanted was yours. Making my entrance again with my usual flair Sure of my lines... No one is there. Don't you love farce? My fault, I fear. I thought that you'd want what I want... Sorry, my dear! And where are the clowns Send in the clowns Don't bother, they're here. Isn't it rich? Isn't it queer? Losing my timing this late in my career. And where are the clowns? There ought to be clowns... Well, maybe next year. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5yG1Dy5b4A&feature=related
Suzanne takes you down to her place newer the river You can hear the boats go by You can spend the night beside her And you know that shes half crazy But thats why you want to be there And she feeds you tea and oranges That come all the way from china And just when you mean to tell her That you have no love to give her Then she gets you on her wavelength And she lets the river answer That youve always been her lover And you want to travel with her And you want to travel blind And you know that she will trust you For youve touched her perfect body with your mind. And jesus was a sailor When he walked upon the water And he spent a long time watching From his lonely wooden tower And when he knew for certain Only drowning men could see him He said all men will be sailors then Until the sea shall free them But he himself was broken Long before the sky would open Forsaken, almost human He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone And you want to travel with him And you want to travel blind And you think maybe youll trust him For hes touched your perfect body with his mind. Now suzanne takes you hand And she leads you to the river She is wearing rags and feathers From salvation army counters And the sun pours down like honey On our lady of the harbour And she shows you where to look Among the garbage and the flowers There are heroes in the seaweed There are children in the morning They are leaning out for love And they will lean that way forever While suzanne holds the mirror And you want to travel with her And you want to travel blind And you know that she will trust you For shes touched your perfect body with her mind. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czQoGSYBeHU&feature=related
Ring the bells that still can ring, forget your perfect offering. There is a crack in everything, it's how the light gets in. Leonard Cohen - Anthem
Good taste. Cohen is great---my second favorite Canadian Jew (my girlfriend was born in Alberta.) ``Well, maybe there is a God above \ But, all that I've ever learned from love \ Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you''
I remember the first time I heard that song, it really cut me. It was on some PBS folk music special. Townes van Zandt was always my favorite singer/songwriter, but after hearing that Barry MgGuire song, I started listening to/writing a lot more folksy stuff.
The whole song is fantastic. Cohen is amazing and has a ton of brilliant lyrics, but most people don't like his voice. Nick Cave writes great stuff too, but his voice sets people off. My husband is also from Alberta.
Damn, that's a good one. I remember meeting a guy who lived with Kristofferson in Nashville, right after Janis Joplin cut the demo of Me and Bobby MaGee, then subsequently od'ed on heroine. Kris was a bit upset, it seems. Damn, that's a good one too. People just don't write deep song lyrics anymore. I love to play/sing this song on my guitar, but I always feel like such a tool singing about slavery. Those lines are pretty genius. I remember when I understood what it meant---how they would throw draft dodgers in prison during Vietnam. Not the best Johnny Cash line, by far. Man there are so many to choose from: ``I ain't cut out to be no Jesse James'' (that'll be the title of my first album) ``I met her accidentally in St. Paul, Minnesota / and it tore me up to hear her with that long southern drawl''
Damn now I can't get this thread out of my mind. Here's my first entry ``The name she gave was Carolina, the daughter of a miner \ Her ways were free, and it seemed to me \ that the sunshine walked beside her.'' That's by Townes, ``Carolina''.
