In my, admittedly limited, experience; people have to make a conscious decision to feel something about a topic they wouldn't normally think about on a day to day basis.

This is very true. Sadly, most won't.

The best one can hope for is that more people care now than previously and that eventually enough will.

Its better than nothing I suppose.
My favorite alternative is to actually come up with practical solutions as opposed to things that merely make everyone feel better about the problem.

The more we humans create, the more we destroy in order to create those things.

The problem is that there isn't really a reasonable solution, at least not for the majority people.
How do you work together with people to solve a problem when that problem is the people themselves ?

There's always a solution but few want to take the bull by the horns and deal with it. One solution is world wide family planning and birth control education with norplant given out to those who need it.

That's what I meant and, yes, that would be the best solution in my opinion.
But the problem is implementing it. People aren't really going to be cooperative I'm afraid.

Well that kind of solution may never be viable, if only because few people would accept it.
However, that doesn't mean there are no solutions to the problem, merely that a more indirect approach is required.

Humans arent naturally greedy and disgusting and bad. That is a lie. We all have a CHOICE to be who we want to be as individuals and as a collective group (plural in the case of our republic). When oil was originally drilled, it was an amazing resource, and it still is. However, the misuse of resources will be our demise. We can all have ultra efficient vehicles and leave gas and diesel for working and hauling machines. As far as deforestation is concerned, there are many techniques for cutting practices.

If we want to live in a beautiful world, we must fight for it or let it die. We are able to make the CHOICE and ACT. Those in power aren't letting new EFFECTIVE policies pass because the lobbyists are from old powerful money. If you suck power from a dirty coal plant, shut it off at the breakers. You must act to get what you want. The truth is that simple.

As far as population growth goes, that problem will be solved one way or another. I just hope the biota does not suffer in the meantime.

stop, your killing me with laughter! We are as naturally greedy and disgusty as we are naturally endow with an urge to breath, eat and sleep! Sure we have a choice to override our emotions but most choose to do what feels best.

So we should trust humanity to do the right thing ? lol
Would you trust the first stranger on the street with your pet, or your car, or whatever stuff you own ? Hey, what about your wallet ?

Humanity is like Microsoft. You can like that tiny, spotty, little programmer easily, but at the end of the day, that tiny, spotty, little programmer is contributing to the destruction of the world, yet he still has very little impact on the direction of the huge conglomerate he belongs to. Nevertheless people will still resent him for belonging to it, even though he has the best of intentions. Without meaning to he will be consuming other, smaller, family-owned businesses until eventually he can do nothing... but wait for his company to have an antitrust litigation brought against it.

Make of this what you will.

Microsoft should become a small family business again.

I understand all of these points. It is natural to want what is best and moreso. No, I wouldnt trust others with my stuff *chuckle*. Wanting what is best does not mean that we have to ruin everything. We still have a choice at the grocery store (and many other consumer choices) to purchase what we support.

Of course everyone wants to profit and make life that much easier, but life aint easy. In the coming years, major polluters and corporations are going to lose BIG in lawsuits. The money to make repairs and change infastructure has to come from somewhere. Environmentalists are also greedy in the sense of fulfilling thier goals of sustainable living. However, you all missed my point.

My point was the fact that we all have a choice and many choices throughout the day, week etc... I think most people would agree that greed is deterimental. So, environmentalists will only get to impose a fraction of the levels of change for which they pine.

Humans cannot be trusted to do the right thing. So our goverment(s) will make the right choice for us and give tax money to those who want to clean up the actions of others. We can only blame industry for so much. They have given us GREAT products, but at a cost to the environment. So, times are changing to make a difference.

    I hope this explanation helps.
