What about Doom? Didn't that game give birth to the FPS genre in general.... Halo was beaten in that regard by more than 10 years.

Or what about Wolfenstein? That game was the one that popularized the whole genre, and certainly a game that is regarded as a classic today.

For those who think that Halo was "innovative", you apparently haven't played Quake. Halo and it's sequels copied many things straight off of that game.

However, Halo did certainly set the standard for all FPS games on the console, if not on the PC, so I could see the original and maybe Halo 2 becoming a classic.

I like Halo, but it's not exactly A groundbreaking shift from what came before it. It was fun and encouraged easy multiplayer. That's good, but it wasn't revolutionary.

I imagine Pong will be long remembered. Doom may be long remembered as the game that really popularized the fps. Halo might get a footnote if the history of video games ever becomes the subject of serious study.

It already is a serious subject of study, it's just that the games that get mentioned aren't FPS. The only FPS's that get mentioned the most in the history of video games are Doom, Wolfenstein, and Half-Life. Indeed they are still played today (especially Wolfenstein and Half-Life 2).

The games that will be remembered will be games like Mario Bros, Pong, and Tetris. I can imagine those games being played for several centuries to come. Otherwise, most of the games we play today will be long forgotten within the next decade or so.

They were the pioneers of the FPS regime. I agree. However, I doubt either of them had an impact beyond the immediate PC community at that time. No other game in my opinion has had an impact as much as Halo, with the possible exception of Half Life- Counterstrike.

But when you move into the console world. No other game has had such an impact.

Doom and Quake. Halo was engineered by Bungie specifically for the XBOX. So as an FPS it wasn't the first. Bungee had created Marathon which served as a prototype prior to HALO. Incidentally Bungie was created in 1991, while Doom was released in 1993 and Marathon was released in 1994. (Hammer the Wikipedia for exact dates)

Halo was originally going going to be releases on PC and mac, the only reason it was originally launched on xbox was because Microsoft bought Bungie around 1999.
Halo was originally going to be an RTS so Marathon wouldn't exactly make sense as a prototype, although there are a few references to the plot of marathon in Halo.
No one is claiming that Halo 'gave birth' to the FPS genre but it did popularise the genre on consoles.
Halo made great strides in the multiplayer department, something that the original Doom and Quake could hardly be said to have done.

To be perfectly honest I think GoldenEye did more for Multiplayer in comparison to Halo.

Ah but thats untrue Draqon, while it did make it's way to the pc, it was more XBOX related, making it console. I guess some people connect with it more than others. My point is that I had been gaming on computers playing things like Elite on Green Screen Amstrad's, Maniac Miner on the C64 and the original Populous and of course Syndicate (R.I.P. Bullfrog) on the Amiga years previously. Obviously multiplayer gaming was different because it required hotswapping.

The reason I mentioned Goldeneye was you could have Four people deathmatch, which was a step in the multiplayer direction. As for the first historical PC title for multiplayer, you should look to Allegiance (currently now freealleginace since Microsoft allowed the community to continue it and patch it) It came from the Microsoft lab and was truly built to be just an online multiplayer where you have to work with a team as a team to win.

I'm an avid gamer, but not sure I've played enough games to properly participate in the argument.

All I can say is that I would like to find a game that lets me go redneck and drive the warthog (fast enough to be airbourn half the time, of course) with a buddy shotgun with the flag and 'nades, and a guy in back applying liberal ammounts of lead to skull. The bumper full of the baddies' "superfluous parts", and the smell of napalm in the air... smells like... victory...

j/k, but seriously, the warthog was a hell of a multiplayer dynamic, and I wish there were more vehicles in multiplayer FPSs that held many people for different roles.

also, I've got the soundtracks for halo 1 and 2 as a bit of a guilty pleasure

Halo will be remembered as the first decent FPS on a console. But that's not saying much, given the competition and the awful controllers that consoles have offered.

On the PC it was blown apart as an FPS by Half-Life (1 and 2).
Sure, HALO looked good, but after a while it was just the same, same stuff. No real variety.

    FarCry is also far superior.

And the Call of Duty series - for pure adrenalin-pumping mayhem... nothing better - although somewhat too scripted for some people's tastes.

I guess HALO will be remembered by the console-players, but not so much by the PC brigade, and until the consoles bring out a keyboard+mouse style controller, the PC will be the true home of FPS games (imho).

The controllers on consoles are not 'awful', having played a number of FPSs on both console and PC I can say with a great degree of certainty that the controller is far batter suited to the task at hand.
The strength of Halo is its variety, of gametypes, of maps and general insanity, at least in regards to Halo 2 and especially Halo 3.

I've played Far Cry, it didn't seem to have any redeeming features.

Call of Duty single player is pretty fun but the multiplayer is fairly average.

I'm fairly sure there are quite a few more FPS players on console than on PC, especially seeing how much better they seem to sell on console so I think you are in the minority there.

I will always remember Halo for introducing a decent campaign.
    That, and It's soundtrack.

Half life and it's sequel were ok.. but the soundtracks were the same electronic beats compared with background noise and people shooting at you.
