The Arab world needs the USA to save Kuwait from Iraq, to save Iraq from Hussein (the guy who killed hundreds of thousands of his own citizens by the hands of his own apparatus and his crazed sons), and the Arab world from Iran. It also needs the big American dollars to pay for the oil that the Arabs never had to discover, never figured out how to extract, to this day use American technology and American workers to extract, never figured out how to use that oil or have any industry where they may have uses for it with American help, so that these Arabs can live in luxury (well, their leaders anyway). But as far as cleaning up their own back yard, they are only capable of throwing shoes. Each and every Iraqi should be kissing Bush's sole. They should thank him he showed up in their G-dforsaken shithole at all, the ungreatful savages.

Don't get me wrong, sometimes we just can't help it. I laughed when my grandfather told me the story of Reverend Perry Winkle. And I certainly chuckled last night when I heard a correspondent on the radio whose name was "Begshet", or some such. I'm not sure of the spelling, but I'm damn sure it wasn't what I heard. At any rate— —that is a different question than the freedom to throw his shoes. Freedom does not come with a fifteen-year price tag. To the other, though, I doubt he'll actually get that sentence. I find the more important irony to be that "freedom" was an afterthought in this invasion, and that we went forward in what eventually became a war for freedom and dignity by slaughtering civilians, protecting the killers, imprisoning people without cause, and calculating reasons to exclude them from any law on the planet except that which we would, for our convenience, assign. This war is rife with irony, most of it sick. The irony you point out is desperate.
