What appears to be on the face of it a personal protest which echoes the sentiments of Iraqi's at large is revealed later in the article to have potentially much more serious undertones:

Should it turn out that Muntadar al-Zaidi was part of a larger conspiracy, it may signal the beginning of a new era in Islamic global terrorism, one in which simple items of clothing are transformed into potentially deadly weapons.

No longer will it be sufficient to board a plane or train with a simple baggage and body scan. Travelers would be required to travel stark naked. Since bags could potentially be used as a weapon, luggage would be forbidden as well.

To save time and effort, governments would avoid the unnecessary hassle of creating new legislation by invoking the laws already used to transport cattle.

Ribald Dorkins, Professor of Explaining Science to Liberal Simpletons at New College Oxford said, "if enough Iraqi's were to throw enough shoes at America over a long enough period of time then one of them might conceivably land in the general vicinity of America if we also take into account the shifting of the earth's tectonic plates and continental drift."

"That alone justifies an all out pre-emtive nuclear strike against Iraq to protect our freedoms," he added.

This is a comforting trend. No longer will they bother with all the trouble of killing us in mass. Now, they will focus on mere humiliation. It's cheaper.

    (chortle!)

    (chortle!)

We have far too expansive a definition of terrorism these days.

I mean, what, was it a Shoe of Mass Destruction?

    The latest rage among terrorists

Title: "To George Bush, his critics are just lone difficult schoolboys", by Mark Steel
    Date: December 17, 2008

When in doubt, look to Mark Steel. What? Seriously. When a British humorist can sum up our American issues so aptly ... well, okay. We've always had certain problems with reality when some aspect of our reputation is on the line. Perhaps that's why Americans seem to be split into three camps about the recent shoe-throwing incident in Iraq: those who are mortified and outraged, those who find it hilarious, and those who just don't care. One wonders, in the end, just what aspect of our reputation is at stake.

The throwing of shoes is a long tradition in the Arab world, an act of rebuke and disdain. Yet to hear some tell it, the man is a terrorist. But come, now. Isn't that just a bit overstated? Where is the terror? ("Leave our land, you imperialist raiders, or I will throw my shoes at you!") Soon enough, we should expect to hear about how one of our beloved American pop bands gets bottled or stoned off the stage by terrorists. Like, I don't know, Nickelback?

Ah, the twenty-first century. Welcome to the monkey house.

Who ever said that the man was a terrorist??? I've never seen or read anything to that effect at all.

And, Tiassa, aren't you missing one of the great ironies of this case? That man would never, ever, have thrown his shoes at Sadman Hussy.

Yet the very man who gave him the freedoms to voice his discontent is the very man that he throws his shoes at. And you don't see the irony?

It's pathetic, isn't it? The Arab world needs the USA to save Kuwait from Iraq, to save Iraq from Hussein (the guy who killed hundreds of thousands of his own citizens by the hands of his own apparatus and his crazed sons), and the Arab world from Iran. It also needs the big American dollars to pay for the oil that the Arabs never had to discover, never figured out how to extract, to this day use American technology and American workers to extract, never figured out how to use that oil or have any industry where they may have uses for it with American help, so that these Arabs can live in luxury (well, their leaders anyway).

But as far as cleaning up their own back yard, they are only capable of throwing shoes. Each and every Iraqi should be kissing Bush's sole. They should thank him he showed up in their G-dforsaken shithole at all, the ungreatful savages.

So basically they get the Americans to do all their work and pay them for it? And throw shoes at them when they don't do it properly? And this shows that the Arabs are dumb? lolz

Think of it this way. With 50,000 nuclear weapons, Americans crap in their pants over a nonexistent weapons program in Iraq or Iran. So much so that they go there and kill hundreds and thousands of them. And then they go broke rebuilding their country.

The Arabs have to do nothing, NOTHING at all. And yet, it would seem that the Americans are afraid of them. Even with a shoe in hand, an Arab is not afraid of arguably the most powerful man on earth.

I know he's started countless wars with millions of needless deaths, but you can't help liking him can you?
The way he dodged those shoes had faultless comic timing.
If only he had gone into films instead of politics, he could have been another Ronald Reagan.

    Austin Powers comes to mind.

Did you see his interview on CNN?

Journalist: Mr Bush, did you get angry when you found out there were no weapons in Iraq?

Bush: I think angry is too strong a word. I was unhappy.

A note on irony, and other notes ... or something

Look up, Max, at the title of this thread.

Does it make you feel better to play child's games with a name? Don't get me wrong, sometimes we just can't help it. I laughed when my grandfather told me the story of Reverend Perry Winkle. And I certainly chuckled last night when I heard a correspondent on the radio whose name was "Begshet", or some such. I'm not sure of the spelling, but I'm damn sure it wasn't what I heard.

    At any rate—

—that is a different question than the freedom to throw his shoes. Freedom does not come with a fifteen-year price tag. To the other, though, I doubt he'll actually get that sentence.

I find the more important irony to be that "freedom" was an afterthought in this invasion, and that we went forward in what eventually became a war for freedom and dignity by slaughtering civilians, protecting the killers, imprisoning people without cause, and calculating reasons to exclude them from any law on the planet except that which we would, for our convenience, assign.

This war is rife with irony, most of it sick. The irony you point out is desperate.

Terrorist using less then lethal weapons on politicians, instead of killing them selves and as many civilians as possible in a blaze of fire... ooh what a wonderful brave new world!
