    Don't have too.

We didn't a lot of the time, unless we had a blunt, and then the only tobacco was the cigar skin.

    Depends on what you like.

If you smoke by yourself it's probably better to use tobacco, but if you share then there's not much point.

I never noticed much at all, apart from having a difficult time walking. It felt as if I had anvils bound to my feet lol

Intelligent people smoke because they know that life is bullshit and they are willing to die a few years early. Actually that might be why idiots smoke but who knows. I'm sure intelligent people and unintelligent people might smoke for the same reasons which are simply because they enjoy it or are addicted. I have heard 14 year old kids say they smoke because they are going to die any ways. I have heard reasonably intelligent people say basically the same thing.

I smoke because I enjoy it and it can sometimes relax my mind. I usually go a few days without smoking every month and I could quit anytime. Also, I do most of my smoking at night and while driving which is very relaxing. If I ever found myself addicted I would make myself quit.

Einstein smoked a pipe "I believe that pipe smoking contributes to a somewhat calm and objective judgment in all human affairs,".

One: Einstein was not a medical doctor or a bio-chemist. Edison also thought that the body was a worthless vessel.

Two: Einstein lived and died in a era where idiots and savants alike all smoked and there was little medical evidence to indicate that tobacco was so harmful.

Good points, but it raises an issue I have long had.

How could any person not suspect that breathing in smoke, regularly, would not cause problems?

All the reasons have been pretty well stated. Really the question is no different from why people eat unhealthy food, or avoid exercise, or sunbathe, or go mountain climbing, or do anything that harms the self. Most people have at least one vice in their life.

I started smoking on road trips with my buddies. None of us were smokers at the time, it just seemed to help pass the time while we were waiting 5 hours for buses.

Now I find it does help relax me. If I'm particularly stuck on some problem at work, tense, nervous about something or studying, it helps me to focus more. I'm not sure it actually does help in that way, but it at least gives the impression.

Hopefully, like my parents before me, I'll quit when I have children.

This question is baffling. Why do people drink alcohol when it is shown to reduce intelligence and cost a myriad of other ill effects(personally and to the community)? In "Drugs in Society" subject I studied in college we learnt that alcohol has cause much more problem than plain old cigarettes.

I guess if you can smoke and you can drink and do what you want in life then what's the problem? High-strung people against smoking are almost delusional. Take a look around the world and you're having a problem with me smoking? What are you doing to improve the wealth gap and other inequalities? Why would you be so passionate about something like tobacco when the trade of other drugs are funding provincial feuds? Or the popularity of blood diamonds.

I believe in living life as you wish, because you death is always waiting. and I don't want to live forever anyway if it ever became possible. I suppose intelligent people will ask WHY should I care about my health to the extremes? so I can unlock some Higgs Boson secret, or the time-space continuum or to stop ageing? (probability is uber low) There is no point in that. But what you can do is live life to make you happy. Write a song, read Tolstoy and learn about Buffon. It's precious, life is cruel and we are selfish just by being.

In simpler terms, smokers get breaks more often to go outdoors which increases productivity. Smoking reduces awkwardness in social situations. Smokers look cool and bad*ss. Smoking stimulate the brain and makes you alert. Smoking gives you something to do with your hands and mouth. It warms you up on cold days. Carrying a lighter can be useful in certain situations. The whole lighting up can calm you down and the motion is comforting.

I do not smoke. I used to a couple of years back but I quit because I got the tremors and palpitations when smoking. I remember the first high and how great I felt. It took about a year until the cravings are gone.

It is beyond me how some people think having a high IQ(with no consideration of EQ and other stuff) will make someone wanting to live as long as possible and have the most number of children or something to that effect. Primitive.

I've never taken up smoking, largely because my father died of lung cancer when I was a kid.

That said, intelligence or lack thereof, has nothing to do with being susceptible to addictions.

I've been among people who smoke joints since they were called "reefers." I've never seen anyone mix their pot with tobacco. Most of the pot-heads I've known never even used tobacco. Marijuana is considerably less dangeous, so why mess it up?

You obviously don't know much about tobacco. Nicotine is a mood leveler. If you're a little too up it brings you down to normal. If you're a little too down it brings you up to normal. And if you aren't sufficiently in touch with your own emotions to know which way you need to go, it will take you in the right direction anyway! That is one remarkable drug!

Recent research suggests that this may in fact not be the issue. There's some evidence that the major deleterious effect of tobacco is not from the smoke, but from the nicotine itself.

This certainly makes sense, since people who use chewing tobacco get cancer in their mouth. Also, among Jamaicans, who smoke almost as much pot as Americans smoke tobacco, the lung cancer rate is significantly lower.

This does not bode well for the electronic cigarette industry. On the other hand, using a vaporizer for marijuana, so as to inhale no smoke at all, will reduce the physical health risk to just about zero. Same for other ways of ingesting it, such as tea, alcohol infusion, or baked goods.

Since my last reply over 4 years ago I have become a full time smoker for a year, quit, and then to this day only smoke when I go away with work. Sometimes 5 months, sometimes 1 week. Whatever the timeframe I don't hold back, one work trip smoking 40 a day for three weeks. But never feel the urge to smoke again when I'm at home.

I'm clearly not addicted, and would class myself as quite intelligent.

Therefore I smoke because I want tO, not because I must.

To reitterate my earlier posts, smoking feels good. Everyone does dangerous things becuase they weigh the risk, for example; driving, drinking, sports etc.

You could live your life in a bubble doing nothing dangerous, but you might die a 100 year old virgin bore. And no one likes a bore.

    Never smoked in my life.

But the reason why the govs pushed this onto you, is to balance your hormones. It was a form of mood control for the masses.
