Why have intelligent people let themselves be duped into assuming smoking's harm outweighs the good for any & all who do it?

I agree with you. Intelligence doesn't mean you always do rational things.

Who says smoking is irrational anyway?

It would be if no good came from it, but there is good that comes from it.

I guess I have more of an issue with cigarettes than cigars or pipe tobacco, for instance.
On some level, smoking tobacco is quite enjoyable. It has a calming effect and helps with digestion.
I think, though, like everything, the key is moderation. You know, when you're on oxygen and you look like the guy in your avatar it may be time to ease up a bit. Perhaps smoke only two pack of camels a day rather than four.

But, as they say, "Don't smoke, eat right, exercise.......and die anyway".

    Cosmic,

have you ever smoked?? I find these comments just a little bit harsh and way off the mark..

just cos you cant stop doesnt mean you ahve no will power or r very weak minded!

when i stopped smoking (at the end of last year) it took several months of mental preparation which was not easy.. I had tried to stop before but was unsuccesful as my mental preparation was not right.

itr is very hard to stop smoking, probably one of the hardest things i have done...

The government should put its money where its mouth is and ban the sale of cigarettes completely, the hypocricy of the Uk govt is beyond belief as they r effectively drug pushing the biggest silent killer of all time!!

    it sure is

but emnos, it can be done mate, its the mental associations and triggers which neeed to be broken then it is a whole load easier!!

    No, I mean physically..
If I smoke much more than one pack a day my throat starts to hurt, I get headaches and stuff. How do people smoke four packs a day, seriously ?

I think 10 smokes a day is bad enough for me, but I'm with you Phoenix. If a person was awake for say 18 hour a day, they would spend over half their time smoking. What sort of job do they have, or maybe they don't :bugeye:

That's just what my old did. He smoked camel non-filters by the carton (18mg tar when the the of te heavies were 16) and those things would just blow the epiglotis off your throat. But it didn't work as peers got involved in my case. Still, doing that to your own kids might be fun; after all they choose your retirement village so you might as well get in early

    Why do intelligent people start?
Well for the most part such people don't start when they have reach their optimum intelligence (The point where they have developed a number of years of experiences to weigh up the Pro's and Con's).

For the most part they start as Child/Teen or young adult in a quest for adventure, they might experiment with smoking cigarettes stolen from a parent that smokes, bought by somebody else from a shop or begged off a stranger or rebellious friend. Obviously the first time a person smokes they will get a "buzz", a head rush and it's expected that every time they smoke that same effect will occur.

That effect of course is Nicotine interacting with the brain in a high dose for the first time, the brain soon becomes user to this "hit" and eventually "normalises". When that happens that "hit" will never be the same.

Obviously during experimentation they might not even smoke correctly, they might just Puff the smoke into the air and never inhale it into the lungs, of course they could take it right into the lungs and then cough up loads.

    Why do intelligent people stop?
Cigarette's is the true Gateway Menace. All those years they tried turning around and saying "Cannabis is a gateway drug". In honesty, that's rot. You'll find most people that have tried or smoke Cannabis now were introduced to it through smoking cigarettes and cigarettes have maintained their legality. I guess you could say that if you were caught with drugs, you should in reality blame the source, the true gateway drug, the one that governments have been allowing: "Tobacco". (entrapment anyone?)

Intelligent people stop because they realise:
    • It ruins their own health
    • They are no longer in control of their life, their addiction is.
    • It ruins the health of those they smoke around
    • It effects the healthy growth of children making them prone to Lung complaints (Bronchitis), Asthma, ADHD and Bipolarism, with of course the publicised potential of various types of cancer.
    • It makes their breath smell, discolours their teeth and It also ages skin at an accelerated rate.
    • It generates discolouration of the Walls and Ceilings of the places they smoke (Merely painting over is not enough, it requires lost more paint than a normal redecoration and that is IF the walls and ceilings haven't been washed down with anti-tar agents)
    • The tar will settle on electrical components and in fan units, this means that dust and fur can stick to the tar decreasing airflow in things like computer and also increasing their temperature. I'd never want to buy an electrical devise or fan from a heavy smoker.
    • Drinking out of cans and using cans as an ashtray is hazardous.
    • Those that don't smoke are less likely to set their house on fire through a smouldering cigarette.

    Quitting

Quitting might seem difficult to some, I managed it, I know it's possible to overcome. Like most have stated you have to have the will to quit, if you have no intention of quitting, then you will always be greeted with failure.

Obviously cold turkey is near impossible, I never went cold turkey. I did however get up to 20 a day, that's when I made the decision to stop smoking before that I had been use to smoking less, but due to some hospitalisation I couldn't escape the hospital and it elevated the amount I smoked.

When I eventually left the hospital, I still smoked heavy for a bit until I decided to quit. When I made that decision, I moved to smoking the lowest Nicotine/Tar cigarettes I could find on the market at the time. They were a particular brand with a perforated line around the filter that we use to back in the day use a Rizla to seal because of how low the cigarettes were.

To begin with smoking the low nicotine/tar cigarettes was a problem, you see my body still had the cravings for the full nicotine even if the visual number of cigarettes was the same (or even more). It meant I got through them quicker, however I had to stave out the course. slowly but surely I got use to the low end cigarettes, I lessened the numbers I was smoking. 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8 then 4 a day. by that point I took into consideration, these cigarettes were known to be low, perhaps I could just stop now?

So I stopped, of course to begin with I was still fidgety. I didn't want a cigarette every 5 minutes like how I had been doing, instead I was self-conscious about what to do with my hands, I still felt the need to physically generate the movements associated with smoking.

I could of bought some sophisticated tool to help quit here, one of those fake cigarettes that people smoke. In stead I got a nice thick straw like you'd find from a fastfood outlet for drinking shakes with and I cut a section of it the length of a cigarette. Then when I felt the urge, I just breathed air through the straw.

In essence the entire Fidgeting was similar to Hyperventilation, breathing through the straw I guess would be similar to breathing in and out, in a paper bag.

Sucking air through a straw didn't last long and as ridiculous as some of you might think it would look, it worked. Eventually I put the straw down and that ended my cigarette addiction. I've never want to smoke another cigarette or have ever fallen foul of having one passed me. I even passed a new, unopened pouch of tobacco laying outside of a shop and decided to ignore it, I know I could of either had it for myself or sold it to someone that smokes, but to be honest I wasn't going to be a part of encouraging their habit.

Yeah, like cokes are the gateway drink for liquor.
I've known plenty of people who smoke pot but not tobacco & plenty who smoke tobacco but not pot.

    Maybe for you.

I don't smoke. I've never tried any form of tobacco. I have, however, smoked weed (never liked it) as well as sampled a buffet of other drugs. Not any more though. I'm all grown up now.
