A while back, I was looking through the "Big Book of the Unexplained" when I saw the story about the Mayans and their counting systems. The interesting one is their Long Count system, where they accurately predict when the seasonal solstices will be, and what will be in what position in the sky at the time. All incredibly interesting and swaying. Until the very end.

That's when I read up last night on the subject, and left my friend's house frightened. Litterally shaking.

The Mayan Long Count calendar ends in the year 2012 A.D.. There is nothing past it. December 21st, to be exact. That's not even the scariest part, either! Their incredible accuracy IS.

It is said they spent hundreds of years perfecting it, and finally got it right by 325 A.D. or so, and after that, they calculated dates thousands of years past, but only forward until 2012 A.D.

I need to know...what does everyone here think of the mayan system, and their prediction that the world will end after that date? Are they religious fanatics? Are they reliable? Tell me what you guys think.

I've been led to believe that it's just the end of a cycle. They never bothered recording dates after this as they had no use for them. If they lived longer the date probably would have been different.

The long count ending in 2012 is not a prediction of the end of the world. It's just that dates beyond that can't be represented using the Mayan system. The date "rolls over" to zero - just like when you reset your computer's clock and suddenly it's 1980 again.

this shouold please anyone who does not agree with this subject matter in this forum, but in answer tot he question, i can offer the specifics as offered by sri yukteswar, in his book, "the holy science" in whihc he calculated based on the vedic calender whihc is even more precise as to calculating the changes in pattern however slight in rotating planets and alternating seasons and such, that mathmatically, the world exists in cycles (as was stated above) which is very much as the buddha stated when adressing the never ending cycle of birth and death. what is interesting, is that the end of a cycle always brings about great change, but that does not necessetate end of the world.
as a logical person, i cannot directly discount the existence of that possiblity, but i can not also, with any real certainty garuntee it. mathmatically, we're headed for change, but let's face it, the invention of the telephone was a radical change, the mass printing of holy texts and so on.
all this to say two things, first that i agree wtih the person who related it as the end of a cycle, and that if you are seriuosly intersted that sri yukteswar's book "the holy science" is a good place to start, especially if you are logic/science minded.

I read about the Mayans some years ago. If I remember correctly there are a number of cycles/periods(ie decade, millenium etc for us) within the long count, but I can't remember the names etc.
I'll chase up the book up, thanks.

    'end' of the world

Hi! yeah I heard about this, too. I think it's the end of a cycle, that our consciousness will change somehow. I don't think the Earth is going to blow apart or anything. If I can make it another 8 to 9 years it will be interesting to see what happens. I have no control over something like this. We're supposed to move into another dimension or something. And I heard that some people will be aware of the 'shift' and some won't. They'll just continue on their merry way. Maybe this has happened before and we just don't realize it

What will happen is the same thing that happened to the Roman empire, it slowly rotted from within and we might have visitors over here on Destination Earth

What a selfless act predicting the end of the world for the rest of us would be.

If only they'd predicted the demise of their own civilisation, and avoided it, .....

Known as Time's Special Witness, 7th century Mayan prophet Pacal Votan left a universal message for future generations of an evolving Earth.
Proclaiming,"If Humanity Wishes To Save Itself From Biospheric Destruction It Must Return To Living in Natural Time," he foretold of our accelerated technological society, and the resulting damage of our collective divergence from Natural Law in exchange for materialist values.

Personally I use the Mayan Calendar "the natural time" the Dreamspell calendar. The 13 months 28 days, 260 tzolkin calendar overlapped by 364 days with the 365th the day out of time. The 13:20 calendar instead of the 12:60.
When they meant 2012 as what most think of the end of the
world they didnt mean the "end" of the world they meant the end of "time" time is a tool... time doesnt really exist its an illusion, "natural time" is round...a cycle of changes, not a linear measurement of changes.
and they made 2012 as it cuz it represents the end of 1 full cycle of the long count of their calendar of ....26,000 year evolutionary program. So in a way it is the end and it isnt the end... depending on how you view it, its all about perspective. Whether we change to natural time or not the end of time is certain to happen they believe... the mayan calendar has been passed on from generations for that moment to be prepared for that very moment of end of time. Its a step in evolution for the humanity and earth.

The grand cycle of evolution will culminate winter solstice, December 21, 2012 AD.
The 26,000 year cycle of the Homo Sapien's evolution and development is mirrored by the 260-day cycle of human gestation. Collective humanity is right now maturing into the being we have long been encoded to be. As with any labor, it is not the mother, or the baby, who is in charge. It is the primal process of Birth itself unfolding its own destiny, working to ensure the survival of mother and child.

According to the Maya, the "future" which lies beyond this end date is literally "a new world" - "a new creation."
All that has been unconscious is becoming conscious.

    IN LAK'ECH
from the Yellow Planetary Human : kin 192

As for their civilazation.... it wasnt destroyed... in part it was. But not to them...they dissapeared, thats why we think it was destroyed completely. They moved beyond time, the Mayans where the masters of understanding "time" and mathmatics... if you use the Dreamspell Calendar you'll find patterns thru the mathmatics.

See, Inta, there's a problem with your reasoning. A full cycle would be 20.0.0.0.0

    Their calendar ends at 13.0.0.0.0

The Maya have always used cyclical time.
Their calendar round worked on a 52 year cycle.
Every 52 years (about one lifetime) the calendar would start over again.
When they decided they wanted to recrd their history, they realized they had to expand their 52-year calendar and invented the long count calendar.
It's about as simple as that.

Even if they DID predict the end of the world, of which there is no evidence to suggest, other than astronomical events, they have no history of "predicting" anything, nevermind doing so successfully, why would we accept it as true?
Why not just accept Jocariah's prophecies as true as well?

It makes no sense to think that not only did they predict the end of the world, but that the prediction is correct.
    Why would you do that?
Why do people have this consuming need to grasp onto the magical abilities and proerties of civilizations past?
    Especially dead civilizations.

At the same time, knowing that they knew the heavens as well as (or even better than) us, including meteor strikes, I AM tempted to book a vacation to spend the Soltice in 2012 in New Zealand.

    calendar mayan, vedic.bible

perhaps it would be clear when one knows the structure upon which
    these cycles are placed.

The time structure they used was base 12, therefore they would have had to add another preceding place holder.

Their calendar "Ends" as 13.0.0.0.0 [5 place holders] or "Begins" at 1.0.0.0.0.0 [6 place holders]
Since each place holder only goes up to 12...similarly..

After 9 comes 10...we add another place holder. But if we had base 12 it'd be something like..
    \(1\to2\to3\to4\to5\to6\to7\to8\to9\to\phi\to\Theta \to 10\) Where 21 is represented \( 18\) or 23 is represented \(1\phi\)

-Actually the correct place for this thread should be in astronomy since that is where the Mayan calender has its basis

Its just the end of The Great Year, in astrology its the end of Age of Pisces and starting The Great Year again with the Age of Aquarius. This has been in this forum couple of times I think, but in free thoughts or pseudoscience, how is making accurate calender based on the movements of objects in the sky pseudoscience, thats the question...?.
Because all the irrelevant junk what is been attached to it.

    What it REALLY means:

One day the Dean of the Mayan University checks his grant applications and list of tenures for the coming academic year, and sees that this one guy has been drawing a salary for several years, but he can't recall who he is or what he does - so he goes to see him.

"So what are you researching then?"

"I'm getting all the calendars worked out for the years to come"

"That's Great! - how are you doing so far?"

"I'm up to about 4,000 years in the future"

"Errm ok, thanks for that - we'll let you know about your next grant application in a few weeks"
