jessiej920 i wouldnt really say its a grey area, its quite clear cut. As long as the people concent (as in informed concent) and are able to concent (ie above the age where the law stipulates they have the cognative capacity to understand there actions) then it should be legal. The goverment should only be regulating the porn industry to the extent they would any industry (making sure they are not enslaved, paid a fair wage, OH&S apropriate for there industry ect). Futher more this goes for prositutes as well

I guess I meant porn is a gray area when it comes to people's opinions on porn and whether it negatively or positively affects society, but unless your a sadist, mentally ill, or a rapist, I can't think of many ppl that would say rape is 'beneficial' in any way. I was just trying to make the distinction between rape and porn.

I find the results of this study improbable, despite the fact that the OP seems to think them outright proof.
I think rather that porn stimulates sexual desire. When boys see a picture of a naked girl in Nuts magazine they become aroused; if they had not picked up the magazine they would have carried on as normal. The more people have sex, or masturbate for that matter, the bigger their appetite grows.

Cellar_Door umm thats not really true,
I guess you could say there is acute arosal and chronic arousal.

the acute is what you get when the gender of your desire starts removing there clothing or a person (it actually doesnt matter which gender they are or even if you are atracted to that gender) starts giving you head ect.

The chronic kind is what school boys refer to as "blue balls", however i think girls get it stronger than guys do (or at least more than i do

You will continue to be horny wether there is even a HUMAN around (or a piture of them or anything else)

Porn is all about fantasies, and i think most people understand this. The ultimate scenario, where the sex partner of their dreams does exactly what they want them to do. Do you want people to watch mediocre porn, where some average semi-chubby girl gets fucked missionary style and the man cums in some paper towel?

How would watching too much porn hurt others anyway?

Lets say that you had the power to regulate through law what porn looks like... what would you do?

Would you rather have people watch existing rape videos, or go out there and rape people? There's also rape fantasy movies, and probably anime child porn. What if you have the option to delete all the existing (child) porn movies from the internet? Would you do it, knowing that it will increase actual (child) rape?

he is backed by a study, and you are backed by your imagination?

porn decreased, so according to you, more porn would have meant more rape? it doesn't make sense. what accounts for the decrease in reported rape according to you?

You are right, it is really definitely not just about sex.

I've never been raped, but I've had my fair share of the sexual harassment women get when they're out trying to have fun at social venues.

One time I was out in the pub with some mountain biker dudes, and I was on the way to the toilet, and someone not only grabbed my ass, but yanked at the hair at the back of my head, which is an obviously symbolic rape gesture. I was wearing a loose fit black skull tshirt, black combat pants that were also loose fit, and a leather jacket that made me look about 3ft thick from one shoulder to the other. And hell, I'm fairly lean and harsh featured, in clothes like those I look like an androgyne. How the hell was that about sex?? It wasn't. I don't actually know what was inside that dude's head, but my guess is that it was about anger. To him women are supposed to be sex objects, and I didn't fulfil that role by dressing as a sex object, so...

To an extent I agree. The problem is that it can exasperate problems and confusion already present. Does hardcore porn serve any real purpose? I dont really know of any. Does it sap creativity and and foster negativity? Probably or possibly definitely.

No porn doesn't serve anymore purpose than anything else we do for entertainment. I think it encourages creativity though. A lot of couples get ideas from porn, where as if they had never watched would have never tried it and would continue to be bored with their sex lives. When it comes to creativity there is nothing wrong with being inspired. So I guess in that respect porn has more uses than the other things we do for entertainment like watch movies or playing sudoku.

Yes, completely by my imagination, it's not as if teenage boys are ever turned on by centrefolds.

What are you talking about? And at what point did I assert that?
The decrease in rapes could have been a result of a multitude of factors - the study just shows how two variables changed at the same time. How does that prove they are linked?
I dispute the findings of this study because an increase in porn, if anything at all, would cause an increase in sexual appetite.

If an increase in Antique's Roadshow re-runs increased at the same time as murder rates, would you take a study seriously that suggested that one caused the other?

I don't agree that hardcore porn is bad per se. If you're addicted to it and can't function sexually without the aid of hardcore porn, yes, you have a problem. But if you look at it occasionally for fun or to get ideas, meh, where's the harm in that?

CutsieMarie89, I dont think there is any truth to what you are saying. One way to gauge this is to look back to the past and i have no reason to think that in the 1920s, for example, that people were not having great sex.

My own personal experience is that either you are good at it or your not. This is not performing brain surgery.

People know what to do on their own and either you have desire or interest or you dont. Unless they are

I didn't say that porn taught people how to have sex. I just meant that it gave people ideas to keep their sex lives interesting. You've honestly never heard of married couples being bored with their sex lives and therapists suggesting they try doing different things. Porn can open up a world of "different things".

Sorry,I revived this one ,but I had to say this:the study that you provided in the OP is not the only study that has been done on the subject.I have read some other related studies in the past (mainly from the internet and some from elsewhere like newspapers/periodicals) and they pretty much all seem to agree that more porn = less rape.Sorry ,I am too lazy to find those back now,but I more or less remember the studies.

1>One study was about the internet, just like this one.It showed statistically for at least 30-40 countries how reported rapes decreased with increased internet use across each of those countries.Yes,every single nation under the study showed similar results. And the only crimes that reduced drastically were of sexual nature.
2>Another statistical study was done on the basis of the sexual freedom given by the law of those nations. It states that countries that allow more sexual freedom-that is countries that allow legal public nudity,(semi-)legal prostitution and more porn production - tend to have lesser number of reported rapes.
3>The third study is even more intriguing.Contrary to common-sense notion ,the women who tend to become rape-victims the most are the one who wears maximum clothing!Bar-dancers/strippers (and prostitutes too) almost never get raped. The ones who tend to get raped most are the women in some middle east countries who keep even their faces covered.
4>The last one is of different flavour. It says that countries like japan, which has increasingly high amounts of porn production/availability(thanks to high internet-access and a supportive culture) ,also have decreasing and very low birth rates.

I think if you just look at the sheer variety of these results, the most natural conclusion to derive is that somehow sexual drives/aggressions in males get stronger when you prevent them from accessing any form of visual nudity, especially in their younger ages. And the drive reduces drastically when there is plenty of visual nudity available.
Some porn haters may argue that somehow more porn increases unreported rapes(which tend to be crimes of lesser intensity anyway). While that may be applicable for the 1st and 2nd study,it makes no sense in the 3rd or the 4th.

Whereas the almost all evidences that go AGAINST porn actually come from criminals who basically use porn as an "excuse" for their craze. How smart, you normally don't use the things you love as excuse,do you? They would have probably commited those crimes with or without porn.

I also observed in another similar thread that Asguard was very supportive of the fact that women desire sex at least as much as men do.While that may be true for actual sex,but I am confident that women do not desire pornography as much as men do.Because porn is visual sex and we need to have a proper distinction between visual sex and actual sex.And recent MRI scans have proven this. While both male and report arousal on seeing naked/sexual images ,but men show almost an explosion in brain activity under the MRI that women simply don't show, eventhough they too have increased brain activity.

And it makes sense.Males are visual creatures afterall.Women ,I think ,tend to use porn to get into the mood,to increase their apetite for sex.Men use porn for the exact opposit-to satisfy their sexual apetite. If you give men a choice between visual sex and actual sex, many times men will indeed choose the porn video over real sex, especially if the porn models are comparatively sexier.I don't think women will ever do that. They are probably more into the real thing.

I once saw this funny cartoon in a related article.A couple are in bed ,and they are watching porn. The woman is waiting eagerly for the man to make his move. But the man is just too busy watching porn.

Now this doesn't mean that the man doesn't love his spouse,or that he will betray her,it just means that he needs that something extra to satisfy his eyes.

ok so a result of porn:

    WOMEN:
unsatisfied number of women who lack sex from preoccupied with porn men

safe number of women who could have been raped but are home safe untouched by men who jack off of porn,

    MEN:
a really horny number of men who go rape other women as a result of watching porn to satisfy their desires fully.

a number of men who are home alone jerking off porn and not sexually exploiting any girls as a result of it.

I believe there have also been studies from countries that legalized prostitution showing that the incidence of rape decreased after the prostitution was legalized. It seems to somewhat refute the whole "rape isn't really about sex" thing that people like to repeat over and over.

Nasor rape is about power. I was reading a british artical on Sadisum ranging from light consentual bondage with your regular partner right up to the Rape murder serial killers. Basically this artical implied that it was all wrong (ie its statment that "most people on the lower end who are more likly to tie up a consenting partner never seek help") however it is a british artical and in the UK i belive S&M is a crime even if consentual. The most dangerious oviously is when sexual sadisium exists in a person with antisocial personality disorder. Theses are your sexual serial killers. Then there is the lower end who would ALWAYS seek consent and would never rape. However there IS a chance that the middle of the range could be swayed by avilability, ie if they have access to men or women who will consent they will go with that or if not they will rape. I dont know if there have ever been scientific studies on this however

Yes, people say this all the time - but is there any actual scientific evidence to back this up, or is it just one of those "truisms" that people mindlessly repeat back and forth to each other?

I could certainly believe that some cases of rape about about power. But sex is something that most people have a strong desire for, and there's a certain segment of people who are willing to use violence or other illegal means to get the things they want. If they can get it legally with less risk or hassle, then they probably would.
The issue here is that I doubt very much that ALL rapists are acting out their bondage/domination/whatever fantasies, rather than merely being people who want sex but can't easily convince someone to have it with them, and are also criminals who don't mind breaking the law or hurting people to get the things they want (be it sex, money, drugs, whatever).
