    I have a desktop server for my lan. It serves all of my files when I am at and am away from home, I use VNC-Remote Desktop. It's only a PIII at maybe...870mhz. It's been on for maybe...2 months?

    It never gets hot, and it's running almost no CPU...is it sucking up a lot of power?

    This has obviously been covered by others elsewhere, however the article I looked at has some interesting information including how to work out how much you pay in electric to run your computer.

    I only leave my laptop running. I turn pc off because the sound disturbs my sleep.

    Since the average lifetime of a computer is around 5 years or less, any stress on the machine from switching it on or off will be unlikely to have any effect prior to the decommissioning of the machine.

    The half degree most certainly will trigger the thermostat. It will make a difference just the same as your central heating makes a difference. The Thermostat doesn't know where the heat comes from, doesn't care. If you heating is on, and your PC is on, the heat from your PC helps trigger the thermostat, and your heating turns off. End of story.

    I leave my desktop on all the time, only because I'm having an issue with my current motherboard where it doesn't want to POST all of the time, and sometimes takes 10 minutes of trying to get it to come up. I fear one day soon it just won't post at all, and I'll just have to replace it.

    i dont know if its better or not, but i leave my computer on all day, i shut down at night, and i switch it on in the morning,
