    Hi there.

I just recently opened a Yahoo account for the purpose of live chat with someone who does not have Gmail or other chat programs.

Today, I signed in to check any messages there, and then went on to browsing the web, without having signed out from the Yahoo account.

And as I was so browsing, there opened a Yahoo chat window on my screen from some unknown person, of dubious nature, to boot.

What happened? How can I prevent this from happening in the future?
Was my computer or my Yahoo account violated?

There is F-Secure running on my computer.

Explanations and help are much appreciated.

Need a few important details to proceed.

Could you post a screen shot?

Did you click on any external links from within that yahoo session? Maybe someone sent you a message with a link in it that you clicked on?

    Thank you all.

A chat window opened, the way a chat window opens if someone begins a chat with you.

The thing is - I have never added that person to my contact list. So how can anyone contact me in a chat if I have never added them to my contact list?

I used to have a Yahoo account but ditched it because there was so much spam. My general experience with Yahoo is that it is not very good.

It was someone with a porn avatar saying hi. And it wasn't the person whom I did add to my contacts list.

No. I didn't say anything at all.

    Unfortunately not.
I closed it and signed out immediately after I saw it. If it will happen again, I will take a screen shot.

It sounds like just a random spam bot....but others have better knowledge of this things than me.

Just because someone isn't in your messenger contact list, it doesn't mean
they can't contact you in the messenger. In fact, to send message to anyone
who have yahoo messenger doesn't need any prior contact. I know this from
experience. You can test this by creating new yahoo account, then send
message from it to your own existing yahoo messenger without prior contact.

There are settings to rig it to only allow chat from people in your friends list, however it's not default.

True. Also, they surely had to get your account from somewhere. Either you joined some manner of chat room or they found you similar to other spam comes through yahoo although this would be news to many I feel.
