Surely not, and I never meant to suggest otherwise.

All I wanted to know is why the idea is so horrible.

Insert white and black for male and female. Maybe that will give you a hint.

    Syzygyz---

I assume that SAM/article linked to in original post is worried about faculty (i.e. post-bachelor's degree) where the percentages are much more skewed.

Sorry, SAM, I still don't see your point. Excuse me if I'm being dense

If there are physiological differences between races and sexes, to what extent is society responsible for this?

Its not about girls and boy's take class of 30 students who like match and hardcode science like physics onlu 2-5 people at most and this ones who's parents lied them into thinking its useful for them to study this subjects, of course every parents try this, but other just dont find themselves situated to this subjects.

Btw i've know girl who was good in match though it was out of her interest because real life is more important for her, see real brains getting lost again in society jungles.

You'd have to show that those physiological differences are relevant. Or you could just write The Bell Curve and be done with it. e.g. why do African immigrant students do so much better than African Americans in school?

because they try harder. They don't see being smart as trying to be white.

I noticed in college that, for the most part, I had more in common with African Blacks than American ones. Their outlook, their attitude, even their English was more like mine than American Blacks. I think a significant part of African American culture is concerned with not "acting white" and serves to accentuate the differences between the races. Sadly, getting good grades is covered under "acting white".

I don't think women avoid science; however, there is an ostensible disparity between the male-female ratio in departments such as engineering. From what I've noticed in university, there are tons of women in science programs (usually outnumbering their male counterparts); however, in engineering courses, women are scarce.

And so that explains why, in places that grant high status to rug weavers, men have natural weaving proclivities and are better at it - as shown by their dominance of the field. And in places that grant high status to readers and linguists and low status to rug weaving, men suddenly lose their naturally superior proclivity for weaving and become Talmudic scholars.

The problem is that no one has connected any of the statistically established male/female brain differences to any proclivities in particular except the desire to nurse babies,on the one hand, and throw a baseball at a brick wall hundreds of times a week every week for months on end, on the other.
That would be a better story if it were certain that the leveling had not been accomplished in part by bringing the male scores down, rather than solely by bringing the female scores up, from past levels. This is especially worrisome in the age brackets in which formerly males showed a sudden separation from females in math interest and scoring - around puberty.

The drop in male interest in technical scholarship and scientific learning of all kinds is almost as marked as the gain in female interest, in the US.

plazma the reverse question is being asked for teaching, nursing and child care. how do we get more males into these proffessions.

actually my view is that getting more gender balance in all areas of health and education should be a bigger focus than how to get more women into engernering because a bridge doesnt care wether its designed by a man or a women but gender balance in health and education makes a HUGE difference for people.

education is harder to prove than education but in health its quite ovious that gender balance is important

for instance with very vulnable pts they should be able to chose the gender of there doctor. female rape victoms ESPECIALLY prefer a female doctor and nursing staff and should have access to them. i dont think any resurch has ever been done into wether males rape victoms feel more comfertable with male or female health staff but there should be.

sexuality realted heath care is another area where gender is important, women in general feel more comfertable with a female doctor doing a cervical exam for instance and again the resurch hasnt been done for male pts

one area where there is some resurch is in mental health and it seems to be split with some men feeling more comfertable talking to a female mental health worker and some definitly prefering a male.

in order to acomidate these differences we need a good balance between the sex's in all areas of health. Its very hard to find male nurses for instance which can make a pt with penile problems alot more uncomfertable.

Politics is another area where a better gender balance is important

That's not a bad thing. But I'm not aware of any good evidence that it is true. Are you?

I know and know of a lot of excellent female physicists, including ones who have made fundamental and important contributions to physics.

When physics chose to stop being such a "boys club" and to start letting women into the profession on merit, it started attracting very bright women with great ideas.

But what if men don't WANT to go into health and education? What if women don't WANT to be engineers? This would seem to be the conclusion to be drawn from Syzygyz's statistic about women and Bachelor's degrees.

To be clear, I'm just playing devil's advocate here---I don't know the answers to these questions.

I'm also not aware of any evidence to the contrary, are you?

I know a lot of excellent female physicists as well, and there are some that really intimidate me.

Further, I would point out that somehow we changed from "science" to "physics". I don't know any numbers offhand, but as an undergraduate, I saw plenty of female biology majors, and plenty biochemistry and chemistry majors who were women. Why does it matter if physics has a deficit of women if biology has a deficit of men?

Another example can come from sports---why are men faster than women when it comes to sprinting? Or why can men lift more weight than women? We're ok saying things like this, and the ability to run fast is just as much genetics as it is environment.

I actually acquired the information from an article in my dad's Mensa Magazine, but as someone pointed out, there is plenty of evidence on the web too.
Besides, stop being so fucking formal! It's not a fantastical claim or something not widely heard of - why don't you use Google Search yourself.

Please tell me that was sarcasm, or deliberate irony, or both.

You come across as an illiterate fool who is preaching his superior intelligence - to humorous effect.
Actually, girls consistently out-perform boys at school. What has that got to do with intelligence?

Sorry, maybe I wasn't being very clear. Performing symmetry operations on shapes was only one relatively small part of the class. My female students having difficulty with it doesn't appear to have anything to do with their overall math ability. Even women who did quite well overall in the class often had terrible trouble with that specific part. Having lots and lots of women but almost no men come to my office hours to get help because they were struggling with that specific part made me curious enough about it to do a little research, and sure enough there does indeed appear to be evidence that women tend to have more trouble with that specific cognitive task than men.

they also get a better education in elementary and high school. American public schools kind of well... they kind of suck. Even countries no one's ever heard of in Africa because thet are so poor have better education for their students than the average American public school.
Girls may show an interest in science or math, but once you're out looking for a job, most aren't very comfortable atmospheres for women. Like being the only female in the whole building. I'm used to being singled out because of my race, but it's more daunting when you're singled out by sex, perhaps its because I'm not used to it. That's why I didn't stay at the reasearch facility long.

Women I guess don't have as much of a problem being called weak than they are being called stupid, perhaps? I don't know. All I know is that I can beat a man in a fight and I run faster than most men and thats all that matters to me

Either way, I know many women who would take an extreme exception to both...

Yeah I know they would and I'm one of them. My policy is if you're stonger than me prove it.
