Can we talk about physics please?

    Otherwise this thread is Cesspooled.

    Interesting opinions.

Would you say it is possible to have something infinite within something finite?

There's no way you can count spacetime because it is always expanding. That is like trying to put a limit on infinity, and that is impossible.

You can't use even the smallest measurement any more to calculate a volume of spacetime, because now the universe is expanding faster than the smallest known time. Understand?

Despite what Read Only says, it's not me that is having a difficulty of understanding. He also better choose his words in the future more carefully.

The universe can't expand into infinity, because that is treating some past as uniquely different, since big bang. And since that time, in certainly a finite past, the universe expands, and will according to all models, continue to expand. This expansion happened from big bang, so the universe has always been infinitely expanding. It's not expanding into infinity. That is simply rubbish.

Now, i'm not going to comment on whether there is an infinite amount of energy. No personal comments anyway, but according to astrophysics, and physics in general, there is certainly an infinite amount of energy in the zero-point field. If you take any energy from this point, the energy fills that space up instantly. So that answers that Xelios.

And Enmos, how can infinity not exist in nature?

    Because nothing is infinite.. lol
Infinity is purely theoretical concept that is used as a tool.
    Infinity is never reached.

Imagine a singular region in spacetime. Theoretically, they exist, and every proportion of them extends into infinity, because the negative region of spacetime blows everything out of proportion.

What is that? You mean "singularity"?

A singularity is also called by its original ''singular region.''

    ....ok.
What do you mean by this? A zero or two dimensional thing extends into infinity?

I'm really just talking about quantity here. So a quantity of mass and energy, tends to stretch into infinity. Including space and time.

What do you mean "stretch". A singularity is neither infinite mass, nor infinite energy. Did the star that it formed out of consist of infinite matter?

Reiku it stretches towards infinity, it never actually reaches it. Infinity is not a number.

why do you think space is expanding? that galaxies are moving away from us doesn't mean that space is expanding, it just means that the galaxies are moving away from us. we also can't be sure if the galaxies are moving away from us. it's based on the interpretation of the redshift and there can be other explanations for it.

furthermore, how could space expand when it doesn't consist of anything? space isn't like a balloon with a physical boundary. it can't curve upon itself. and even if it could, is 3D curvature even imaginable/logical?

if all galaxies are moving away from us, scientists think it means that we are at the center of the universe, so they try to explain it away with the space-expansion theory, but i don't think it means that we are at the center. in infinity, the center is everywhere, so no matter which galaxy we are in, the other galaxies will be moving away from us.

or maybe religions were right after all, and we are at the center, lol...

pi is infinite. and if nothing is infinite, then space is probably infinite because it's nothing.

    Pi certainly is not infinite.

    I can name a larger number. 345663214.

well, of course i maen that the decimals go on forever, they never end, like space

If they never end how can one ever reach infinity ?

    Enmos: You said,

''If they never end how can one ever reach infinity ?''

Umm... that's what infinity is. There is nothing to reach. You seem to be having great trouble understanding this, as you keep saying something expands into infinity. It is more accurate to say something is infinitely expanding, so it has always been in infinity.

    Here's an analogy to tackle this paradox right now. Because i'm not going to talk about it, until someone can solve this. Take our sinularity analogy again. Enmos, you said it stretches into infinity, then let us call stretching into infinity part B, whilst there is an initial point, the actual singularity itself. It is composed of an infinite curvature, but you don't understand this, so we shall call this part, part A. Now;

Stretching into infinity? So point A isn't apart of that infinity, but B is, and not taking into account that both systems A and B actually contribute to one system alone?

So now tell me, did the singularity at point A not have anything infinite about it?

Because i am likely to believe that the motion in the heavens is not due to a static fabric.

All that means is that pi cannot be expressed in terms of the ratio of two integers where the denominator has only prime factors of 2 and 5 (since we work in base 10 and 10 = 2*5).

You need to be careful when you say such things because some people actually do believe that pi is infinite, despite it meaning that infinity is between 3 and 4 and that any circle would have an infinite perimeter...

So it was infinite as soon as the big bang occurred?
    Or slightly afterwards?
    Or even before?

And what do you call "solving" this?
Agreeing with you or showing you data that shows you're wrong?
Oh wait, you ignore the latter so I guess that only leaves one possible "solution".

By solve, i mean an explanation one that is acceptable, that allows the latter half of the system to not be infinite.

Big bang, Oli, was infinite from word go.
