    Also from the source:
It does have the word "appear" in the article, and suggests "more research".

Maybe it has to do with staying warm. Facing north or south, a long animal body has more surface area exposed to the rising or setting sun.

but in the northern hemisphere wouldnt you want the long axis of the body facing south for warmth. for sure in the winter.

Before we domesticated and dumbed them down, did cows migrate like caribou?

The question stands veiled...by the mists of time.

Could we un-domesticate them and find out?

Ah, they are just the fat chicks on the animal kingdom. Deer are the dumb blondes. The cows will hang with them so they can be popular by association.

They are now because we domesticated them.
They may have been predators par excellence for all you know before that.

Never works, the blonde gets the guy, the "fat chick" goes home on her own...

Then she finds out he was a steer anyways.

Or maybe they just turn side-on to the sun, which rises in the east and sets in the west.

Don't think so, that would result in uneven heating - one side would be warm, the other would be colder. And in the summer, dark cattle like Black Angus might very well overheat on the sunny side. (That was the breed I prefered when I was in the business - and those dark cows can become VERY hot in the direct summer sun!)
