When it comes to parents spanking their kids butts :

  1. The UN should be able to criminalize spanking for ALL parents everywhere.

Maybe you're just too stubborn to admit it

She should have used a wooden spoon. I think it would have been a benefit if i were disciplined in a more forceful manner.^^^^^^

    You can't be serious, John?

Knowing the level of force? Are you an adult, John? Are you several times larger than a small child? Have you even an inkling as to the force of an adult exerted on a small child? Do you actually think the child is acting maliciously and is sinister in their intents?

    Think it through, John.

I wasn't terribly mischievous as a kid but we weren't exactly a happy family (not horrible either though).
I suppose stress was a factor.

Ah I see, I was completely spoiled. Everyone waited on me hand and foot. I don't believe I walked on my own till I was 6 or 7. I remember being carried to and from school while my younger sister walked. I had strange fancies about every single thing that I demanded and everyone catered to. Thats probably why I have such an inflated ego.

I was always happy, I think. I don't remember ever feeling sad as a kid.

I was sad plenty of times, despite that I remember my childhood as a happy time

Nah, thats sappy. But I had 7 uncles and 5 aunts. And I was the first daughter in the family [both dad's and mum's side, before the others came along].

. I did see my friends get hit and wooden spoons were a big threat. one time was pretty weird, i think his father had some a problem.

I know what your saying but i think that you need to have them learn the difference between righ and wrong and the consequences involved. I think it does have a benefit, even later in life.

It should be the parents' choice.

Thats good. There are advantages and disadvantages to everything. Now with me, being never spanked [hit only on one very memorable occasion], pandered to all the time, it had its effects. I was convinced, for example, that I could never do wrong or be wrong, its a kind of arrogance you develop when everyone treats you like they want to adopt you for your nonstop chatter. Also, its very poor preparation for the cold harsh realities of life, so it sucks big time when you leave home and discover that most people are big dicks. It makes you vulnerable to exploitation and cheats and cons and you also tend to give out mixed signals because you never learn to hide what you are thinking or feeling and people don't expect that kind of reaction.

But you have the strength to take it, because of the arrogance and bounce back. Takes some time and doing though. Took me a lot of time to find my self and I'm still more jumpy than the average middle aged woman.

John, you aren't teaching right from wrong by hitting them. You are teaching them that violence is ok. Do you understand?

If you want to teach children, you talk to them, not hit them.

Australian law is resonsably clear in this matter.

If you use anything other than your hand thats assult
If you leave a red mark that is assult.

That being said its definitly not encoraged and something im personally against.
Teaches and childcare workers can control ALOT more kids than we will ever have and they never resort to violence.

I have been insecure at times, perhaps because of my childhood.
I can remember not being sure why I was being punished at times..

Why is violence not ok? It's maliciousness that's the problem, and spanking should never be malicious.

I think that it depends on the individual. I meant the level of force not only in a physical sense but in a psychological sense. Not to traumatize the child but to get them to see that what they did was different than just something like not eating their vegetables.

The reason why is to protect them not only from immediate danger but to make them understand there are severe consequences for their actions. I know that as a teen i did not fully understand this. I understand that my situation was different because the people who raised me would never hit me.
