Jizya is a tax mostly for the secular parts of state and for building or repairing temples for Non-Muslims. Non-Muslims are exempt from the Muslim tax, called Zakat-ul-Maal (which serves Islamic purposes [schools, mosques, etc] and as an alms for the poor). Non-Muslims are also allowed to settle their case in either a secular court or a court established by coreligionists. Certain things are lawful for Non-Muslims which are not lawful for Muslims such as pork, alcohol, religious holidays, pilgrimage to religious shrines, and others.
