My dog barks in his sleep. I think they do have nightmares though sometimes my dog will wake up all frightened and fight his hardest not to go back to sleep. Every time he catches himself about to fall asleep he shakes himself awake. Its so funny. I think you can stop thinking. I used to do it in school all the time. Haven't you ever just zoned out and you have no idea how much time has passed or what happened around you. I can't make myself do it its sort of involuntary. I think that qualifies as not thinking.

Interest responses. They all sound plausible. In my dreams i have traveled to place i have never physically been to. Can my (a) dog or rather is the capability there to envision a sequence of events, a movie, substantially foreign or otherwise unknown to them in a matter's of detail. Except that they or other creatures they recognize are in it. This would indicate somewhat advanced brain function. Is a dream a nightmare? Where is the differentiation?
I am convinced my dog has dreams about that "fucking squirrel" that keeps taunting him on our fence in the backyard. He goes absolutely nuts when he sees it. The look on the squirrel's face is " fuck you little dog you can't get me" Sometimes I hear him making noises in his sleep and sometimes they get louder and louder. There does seem to be that point, during sleep, where there is no real activity. Do you know of any reference images?
Perhaps you are right. But I think there are thoughts in the background, you might just not be aware of them, or they go too fast.
