I saw the opening ceremony. It was perfect except, the place was hot. I do not know, why the organizers did not pump cool air to the bird's nest? or otherwise have refrigerated coils pushing air from the ground level...

    Somebody had a brain fart.....

Maybe the air conditioning system wasn't so sophisticated after all

    I still think it's ugly.

I, as a general rule, think the superfluous is distasteful.
For example, I love the way structural elements on Queen Anne homes are flourished, but I hate when people add pieces to their houses, which server no purpose BUT aesthetic.
If you have rain gutters, by all means, make them from copper and have ornately carved end caps, but don't screw shutters to the wall outside your windows that don't actually shut - God forbid they aren't even the right size to close if they WERE put on hinges!

The general shape itself isn't particularly beautiful to me (though definitely not ugly either), but it's still a marvel of construction.
Of course, anyone is entitled to their own opinion

But what do you think about people that call a particular kind of animal ugly ?

    I couldn't agree more.
This building however doesn't have any "added pieces", it's designed to be a functional structure and an artwork at the same time.

    I wouldn't know.
I know nothing about its construction.
I can certainly "appreciate" a marvel of construction, but still think think it's ugly.

I don't think anything specific about the person.
    What do you mean?

It may not, but the entire outer shell/nest/thing LOOKS incredibly superfluous.
    Art, of course, is subjective.
My eyes behold the vast majority of modern art as worthy of the trashbin.

A bit unrelated to the topic but, people call a lot of animals "ugly mofo's" or whatever else derogative term.

While this animal may not be aesthetically pleasing to humans it IS beautiful in it's own right, in that evolution formed it this way.
I think it's shallow to call any lifeform ugly.
But it's not really related to calling a man made structure ugly.. it just made me thing of it.

    Now I see.
I had an idea of where you were going, but I wasn't quite sure.

    So do you agree ?

One could try to apply my previous post to buildings as well though.. the Birds nest is designed like that for a purpose, if it succeeds in it's purpose it can't be called ugly.
    It's quite a stretch, I know

I agree that all animals are beautiful.
I am not certain I would say that anyone who disagrees is shallow.

Too much of a stretch - sorry.

To say that, you would have to agree there is a cognizant God who designed and created all animals.
If you did that, you would lose credibility in my view, and I would start to wonder if I am wrong about all animals being beautiful.

I was really being kind by calling them shallow though.
Those are the same kind of people that started eradicating sharks because they thought they were evil monsters out to eat people.
People that squash spiders because they think they are ugly..etc, etc.
This ignorant and arrogant mentality is a big part of what's wrong with the world today.

    /exits preaching mode..

    THOSE people are shit.
There are plenty of people, though, who would call some animals ugly but not kill them because of their "ugliness".
I'd be hesitant to make the blanket statement that they are all shallow or somehow "bad" people.

I'm not saying they are being deliberately bad, but they should have been educated properly. Maybe it's not their own fault.
The government should be doing something about it. I'm in favor of making Biology class mandatory at least in high school for the entire duration.
Anyhow, I feel I have a "mission" there.. educating people about other life. It's not always appreciated though..
