Hitler's spending on public works was funded by international bankers, they are to blame/thank for that. Before that they were printing monopoly money like mad to pay war reparations.

Repressing the Jews wasn't something he did to use what he thought was an innocent scapegoat. He actually believed some wealthy Jews were messing with Germany's economy and government. Jews have a long history of allegedly doing this, both in the past and present.

I think he deserves respect as someone who accomplished much despite seemingly overwhelming odds. In the end he failed. I think that is more because both the Western and Eastern Fronts were reinforced by America which was something he wasn't counting on. I think he thought he had England nailed down, and figured russia would have lost quickly if left alone. I'm inclined to agree.

Perhaps, none the less Hitler got all the credit.

He may have believed it, but it was Martin Luthers writings that gave Hitler some spurious intellectual authority.

Well in fact, he expected he could cut a deal with Britain, and wouldn't have to fight them either.

Possessing land for 2-3years is not taking over. It's occupation.

He ruined Germany. Absolutely ruined it. Some of his crimes are not even calculable. For instance: how long will the Swastika, previously the #1 good luck symbol and nearly the most ancient symbol on earth, remain "evil" cause of this asshole.

Recognition, yes. Acknowledgment as an orator and premier manipulator, yes. Respect as a human being, fuck no.

My grandfather was a German immigrant and he thought as you do.

I disagree. Hitler tried to stand against people who he thought were destroying his country. Odds are, he was right about much of what he suspected. If you want to throw him to the wolves because he lost, fine. In my mind I give him credit because at least he tried. I think the millions of captured German soldiers who were forced to starve in fields after the war and the way Berlin was pillaged shows what Hitler was fighting.

John Cleese, as Basil Fawlty, addresses this one rather nicely in the Fawlty Towers 'Don't mention the war episode', -- Germay DID start the war.

What happened afterwards was a consequence of getting into it.
If Hitler had stuck to getting the economy back together, post the Weimer Republic, today he might be universally praised, and those events would never have happened.

Hitler was a political opportunist, who cynically exploited resentment of some minority groups, specifically the Jews but also Gypsies and other migrant workers, in this he wasn't the first, and is not the last.

    and the Nuremberg Laws?

hu, today if you mention the fact that NAZIS targeted jews above all other minorities its as if you are the racist.

Firstly, that's a rather questionable assertion.

Secondly, this threads is about whether Hitler deserves respect.

This is the point that's questionable:
Can you cite an example of where doing so it brands one a racist?

    Oddly enough, I don't either.

I note a prediliction on this forum for members to try to draw people into the position of defending arguments, they didn't actually make. This kind of strategy make work down the pub or in school but it hardly ever works on the internet. What say you?
