This is about the closest so far.
Maybe it's a different model of the same brand?

If I see it again, I will do whatever I can to catch it (safely) and take a picture of it.
I've been living in this house for over a year and this is the first I've seen one, however.

    What about this one ?

Apparently it is a Golden-backed Snipe Fly (Chrysopilus thoracicus), but the all-black version.

There is a problem however, most Snipe Flies aren't that big..
This one is about 10 mm (about the size of a Housefly).

The other problem is that the wings don't cover the abdomen like on a moth.
    *sigh*

Can you make a drawing ? It would help tremendously..
So far I, well we, have about exhausted every reasonable possibility.
    We need some more pointers

    HAH!
    You haven't seen my drawings.

It looks like a moth made of pewter with clear and black wing panels like a cicada.
That's about the best I can do.
If that doesn't help, my drawings certainly won't.

A picture really does say more than a thousand words, even a bad one.
The basic body shape for instance.. it's hard to describe it in words.
You and I may not have the same understanding of 'moth-shaped'.
Moths have a variety of body shapes to make it more complicated.

Besides, wouldn't it be fun ?

I know these aren't the right one (they don't have moth-like wings), but their wings
cover their abdomen. Could it be any of these:

    Or this:

    Dung fly:

One-raven said the size is about 1 inch. I wonder, what is the maximum size of
fly family?? I never seen anyone bigger than 1.5 cm..

I'm not implying this might be the one, it's from Indonesia.
    But it's a plant hopper !

They exist. But it doesn't have to be a True Fly.
A lot of insect orders superficially resemble the True Flies.

No, I didn't know, but its properties said it is a Sulawesi bug. Sulawesi is one of the
    bigest island of my country.

p.s.: was sciforums down for the last 5-10 minutes, Enmos? I couldn't access it.

I really think it's one of those clearwing moths that were mentioned early on.

What the hell is up with those wings?
It is an illusion, or are they shaped like a corner?
