Yeah, you might as well go drink out of a mud puddle or the gutter. I thought water collected was just used for gardens. I suppose animals would drink it as well...right?

That's about the only purposes I see for it in developed nations. A well for good, clean water isn't all that expensive.

Now, if you're a poor farmer living in a remote part of Nigeria...

So then what is there to worry about if not for bacteria?

As long as you use completely sealed glass or glass-lined containers, that's about it. But if there was any doubt about the integrity of seal, I would not drink it even in less than a year's time.

This tangent of the discussion is pretty pointless unless you happen to live in an area that might flood or something similar. Otherwise, access to fresh water isn't really an issue - and therefore no need to be concerned about storage.

I am following this thread because I live in an area prone to hurricanes, and the emergency management people are always saying that the number one disaster preparedness measure is to store water. Problem is, you get conflicting advice on how to store it, and for how long it remains potable. Some authorities, like the Red Cross, recommend no longer than six months, and then only unopened bottled water. Others say replace it every three months, still others say add chloramine (not chlorine) and it is good for a year. I've also heard that plastic bottles breakdown and release toxins after a period of time, so only use glass.

I'm really confused and was hoping for a definitive answer from someone here...

a first flush is a system where a certain portion of the INITAL water which is flowing down the drain pipe gets dumped. What it is is a small hose (about 10m diamiter from memory) atached to the end of a normal drain pipe. The diverter to go into the tank then comes off much higher (i belive at least a meter but it could be more for drinking water). The idea is that the first lot of dust and bird droppings ect get washed off the roof in to the first flush rather than straight into the water tank.

As for leaves country people use gutter gards which are a fine mesh to stop the crap going down the pipe in the first place (its a fire hazard to let leaves build up in the gutters anyway so this is automatic wether storing the water or not). Then on the top of the tanks is a really fine mesh that stops not only dirt but incects and other things getting in (otherwise mozzies grow in the tank water).

Im sorry guys but if your living out in the middle of a dessert which this country is you HAVE to use rain water because there are no catchments to get water from. Its possable it goes through a carbon filter as well on the otherside (know my uncle was talking about putting a pura tap onto his rain water but dad was saying he would have to get the filters cleaned twice what i do which is yearly)

why dont you just stock up on some water purification tablets that the army use. My father in law has shown them to me, you can basically drink ANYTHING with these things

I know they are BOTH deadly to bacteria because you cant just pull the chlorine out of water for fish you HAVE to pull the chloramine out too

    Hello, Rand,

Yes, it's easy to see why there would be confusion.

But it's pretty simple to resolve. Use only glass or glass-lined containers, store enough for a month's use, and replace every six months. That way, there's NO doubt that your emergency supply is safe.

Thank you, Asguard, I do have some of those, but was hoping for an answer on just storing water too.

John, my understanding is that chlorine by itself breaks down pretty quickly, like overnight in an open container. Chloramine is much more stable. I know this to be true also because I keep tropical fish and chloramine is a bitch to get out of the water so it doesn't kill the fish.

yeah, chloramine is harder to remove. Usually municipalities use one or the other, not sure if they would use a combination.

just make sure you boil the water when you need to use it and make sure your inital water source doesnt have cryptosperidum in it. That thing is a BITCH to kill, they had an outbreak in sydney and (now i maybe wrong about this) i BELIVE that boiling wont kill it

Question, Asguard: since it obviously DOES rain there (otherwise you wouldn't get anything in those barrels), there HAS to be water in the ground!!

Do you have any idea how far down the water table is? A 500' well isn't all that expensive to have drilled here, don't know about your part of the world.

Thats true, i wonder if chlorine would ever dissipate in a closed container. I dont think it would.

Of course it is best to follow their advise.
