i have to agree with you there (though melbourne water is pritty good) Adelaide water is gross (i have to use a pura tap or i cant drink it) and sydney water is dam dangerious
Water that's run off your roof? I can understand collecting rainwater to drink, but from your roof? That's just sick, man. All the dirt and crap on the roof and in the gutters.... Foul. I picture it having a nice hearty head on it like a good European lager.
Considering my bedroom looks down over the roof of the garage and the gutter, I wouldn't drink anything that drained from it. There is leaves, dirt, bird shit etc in there. I would have to be pretty thirsty to even think about drinking that water.
Aarg! I must agree - that sounds disgusting!:bugeye: Here in the U.S., everyone that isn't on some kind of municipal system (like me) has a well for a domestic water source. Mine happens to be 350' deep and produces tons of very clean and refreshing water. Most wells here aren't that deep but there ARE those that go much deeper. Surely you could go deep enough in "down under" to avoid all the trash that has to get caught in that "tank water"!!!
I would think that if you start off with a good source and sealed bottles, in this case i would recommend glass bottles, i cannot see why it will not be potable for a few years...maybe even forever if stored in a cool dark place. Cover the bottle with a tarp and put them in your crawl space or better still is to bury the bottles fairly deep. Perhaps, if they are buried then build crates amde of hard wood.
Nope, that's bad advise. Anaerobic bacteria will STILL grow and multiply under those conditions and foul the water in less than a year.
If you use distilled water and then store it properly? Are you saying that bacteria will survive the distillation process?
Haven't you bothered to read the whole thread or did you just decide to jump in the middle and start talking? The reason I ask is because I've already given a real-life example using distilled water - and even mentioned it again later.

There are anerobic species that do withstand the process. Several can survive the boiling point of water - which, by the way, is never quite 100C unless you live at or below sea level.. Do a little research. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
god guys, havent you ever herd of a first flush? And we dont throw garbage on the roof, especially not if you live in the country where it builds up and can burn your house down in a bush fire.
Plastics release chemicals into water that have a toxicity level for the body. I would suggest distilling old water before drinking.
That's not good enough for me, Asguard. It would be impossible to completely clean the container simply by dumping what's in it. And were not talking about "throwing garbage" on the roof - no one does that. We're talking about the dust, leaves, bird droppings and everything else that quite naturally falls on roofs everywhere. And even "clean" rain isn't clean at all - it catches particulate matter from the air as it falls and takes it directly into your storage container. I'm well aware that long ago - and in many third-world countries - people used systems like that the water was stored in what was called a "cistern." All they could do was to depend on gravity to settle out all the trash that got washed into their cisterns every time it rained. I'm actually quite surprised to learn that people in OZ use something that's better - but not much - than what's used in backward nations. Can you folks not drill wells like we do and find clear, clean water down there somewhere ?
Not even close and certainly no cigar. Distilling will NOT remove those hydrocarbons - they will evaporate right along with the water and still end up in the final product.

If the goal is elimination of ALL BACTERIA then there is a very simple way to do it. Therefore if no bacteria is present then tell me how new bacteria will grow when stored with the method i described.
