My bootsplash is some black and cyan butterfly thing I made (sounds more camp than it is)
My grub loader background was a fear and loathing (orig artwork) pic of duke and gonzo running along chased by bats but just rewrote so not put grub screen back on yet.

Also what's so l33t about console? I mean I love GUIs but sometimes using terminal is quicker, easier or just no alternative (like with installs etc than need to be done without x running).

My feelings exactly. 'Share you desktop' threads are just ego trips. Though, I'm mildly relieved to see an absence of winxp system trays filled with mindbogglingly shit background apps.

Creeptology, there's nothing wrong with terminals - it's just the people who open one up and run a few commands before taking the screenshot.

It's like in 'The Office' (Ricky Gervais version) where Brent decides that reclining on the desk is the best way to pose when the new secretary walks in.

I'd post my desktop, but I've just formatted so I can't open up shit loads of graphs and flashy lights, so what's the point?

And Gustav, my final insult is...

    ...I'm an iTunes user!

Yeah I see your point in that case, since terminal doesn't look that special anyway (although you can customise it I don't, just plain old black) I wouldn't post screen of mine.

Still as far as command line goes every linux/bsd etc user has to know some command line stuff so it's nothing to boast about really. Like boasting you have an arsehole really.

People tell me real geeks don't customise their desktop and apps. I don't care I like looking at fancy guis. Yeah I know I can hear your cries of "saaaaaaaaaad" from here.

I believe the GUI vs console stigma stems from the notion of 'script kiddie' vs 'hacker'. In other words, some people use programs, some people make programs.

I use XP primarily, because of DirectX (i.e. games) and because its easier. My work PC's are Linux and XP - you need both, IMO. Customised GUIs? So long as you're confident that it's reliable!

I use xp dual boot for same reason. XP just for dx games (I have cedega and wine but not everything runs well or at all in some cases) and apps that wont run in linux (inc in wine).

As for reliable then yeah I don't customise in some cases because it increases resource drain etc etc. KDE and gnome customise easily without much impact (bigger impact is from transparency and effects but if you are that bothered you would use xfce or something). Style xp service only for xp isn't too hard hitting but you have to pay and it's not that customisable. Customised boot splash etc is ok though and makes no difference.

your inane and rather commonplace observations is the only occurrence of an actual ego trip in this thread.

pardon, yours and the other guy
infact you fucks are so desperately eager to knock my aesthetics, you overlook.....

    ......an acknowledgment of sorts.

its ok to cry over this alleged format too. a convenient excuse if there ever was one.

    /snigger

    alrighty then
    carry on jawing
i'll be fucking the bitches upstairs

I have given no indication of my extreme glory? I merely stated that I am [possibly] less noob and ridiculed the 'posed' console screenshots.

And although you admit it's a pissing contest of sorts, that doesn't mean you acknowledge or understand the lameness of showing that kinda shit off?

What? I can't hear you? I've tuned ozone to filter out BS (first-order Gustav filter).

It's a purely aesthetic thing anyway. It's the same principal as when people gather to show off their souped up cars with each other. Sure it's a bit wanky but no one's saying you have to spectate. If you're happy with your stripped down bare bones basic Ford Escort that does the job then fair enough, but people don't buy V8, hydrauliced, sound sytemed to the hilt car so they can admire them in the privacy of their own driveways.

anyone here switched to kde4 yet. I am still using 3.5 and am apprehensive to switch just yet as it's early days. I hear kde4 has lower mem usage and is not that much slower than 3.5 (gaming and intensive doesn't matter since xfce serves it's purpose for speedy no frills).

Also Gustav I see you choose fraunhofer over lame, is it still ahead of lame (I know lame used to throwing out information past 16 kHz). I read somewhere that lame came out on top (3.95 not 3.97) in some cases in the past few months. Still I stick with ogg vorbis over mp3 anyday for lossy (it's open source but I think it's better) and flac for lossless. I am a big fan of flac, a lot of my stuff is flac encoded but most my music remains on cd since I listen to it at home or if I go out on my portable cd player. I would love a portable flac player like a cowon (pisses on irvers, nevermind Ipod). Monkey audio is good too, I just prefer flac.

Hmm... interesting; I was thinking of using that as an example of when 'showing off' is socially permissible (since it's a proper convention) but dropped it as I prefer to keep my posts as terse as possible.

or same principle as taking your case modded like crazy rig to a LAN party. Nothing wrong with aesthetically pleasing desktops/apps/case if it doesn't hinder functionality. IMO people who deny the meaning of this often wear fashionable (mainstream or subculture etc) clothes (instead of dressing for pure function), they wallpaper and paint their houses inside and out. They get stylish haircuts. They have painted cars as opposed to pure functional bare metal with unattractive to the eye antirust coat or similar. The list goes on, people like to make things visually pleasing and I think including your comp isn't wanky, it's quite normal.
