that dental robot was kind of creepy.

I expect that within 60 years people will fall in love with them and legally be able to marry a robot. People's emotion can be elicited by robots just by reacting to the cues. That's why I thought the dental robot was creepy. I felt "her" mouth was "stuck". My mouth started to feel sore.

I'm not so sure about the "health" implications.
What it boils down to is something doing all the work around the house. People throughout the ages originally used humans to do the labor (slaves, servants, etc) so it's not exactly new.
Personally I would love it. I would give me the opportunity to concentrate on other things.

At the same time, it is certain to impact society within the later generations.

As a point of reference - I have no clue how to wash clothes by hand----I'm sure my grandmother knows. My only concept is tossing them in a washing machine/dryer, and they are magically cleaned. I've seen people using washboards or clothes lines in movies, so I have a vague idea of those being the tools involved.......I still have no clue how to use a washboard (how many cycles do I need to use? Where do I pour the detergent?).
Will I ever need to know how to manually wash clothes? My guess is that I will still be using washing machines when I die, and will never need to learn it. I assume the technology will probably be around forever, thus making the information obsolete.


A robot capable of washing/putting away dishes, cleaning the house, and cooking meals may have the same impact. It will save all the labor, but could possibly eliminate certain areas of human knowledge.

 

It's funny but I know a lot of people that can not turn off their main water and change a facet tap, or change a are tire, or even cook a real meal - like bake a loaf bread!

The good thing is that Internet at least supplies much of what would probably be permanently lost.

I've got one of these robots running amok in my house. I got it when Lost In Space was on TV and they sold these for about $4.00 US back then.

I want one like the ones from I, Robot, you know, the ad-crammed movie with Will Smith. Didn't much care for the movie, but the robots in them, with what looked like artificial muscle, subtle facial expressions, intelligence, great agility and robustness compared to your typical sci-fi robot, it was just a realyl slick, cool, awesome design. And actually, if I had such a robot of human or near-human intelligence, I would try to treat it as human, you know, have it think for itself and participate in society symbiotically as best it can. Legality would probably have it that it would have to "belong" to me, like a slave, but I'd still try to let it be itself and learn to live amongst us.

God that movie sucked.

Fortunately, they actually made full blown androids in the books (the Noir-ish novels featuring detective Spooner, not the original book......which the movie butchered). Spooner was partnered with "Daneel Olivaw" who looked totally human.

ok...well first of all I tried them and vibrating ones don't work well, stroking ones work the best. Second of all...this isn't a robot...and something artificial as this in a robot needs to be well coordinated, since genitalia is a very gentle organ of a body.

 

I think they made a life size version of R2-D2.
