Indeed. No doubt they taught you to use the word ilk in the process of brainwashing you. Perhaps I can help. In the meantime,

The current holders of executive power in the US are fascists, in a simple and realistic sense of the word - don't think Hitler, think Mussolini. They aren't Nazis, they're ordinary fascists.

The entire "unitary executive" business, the "shock and awe" that was not only a military but an economic and political approach to Iraq, all that theorizing from the likes of Leo Strauss or policy input from such as Michael Ledeen (an expert in and overt admirer of Italian fascism), the emphasis on Party loyalty and media presentations, the use of principles as propaganda tools rather than policy guides, the martial virtues celebrated above others, the elevation of corporate interests to oversight, implementation, and even specification of government policy - that's ordinary fascism. It's not a metaphor, or even a pejorative if you're the type who thinks fascists make the trains run on time.

Thanks Mad, I am glad we agree that we need to discuss issues openly and honestly and hopefully rationally. When the fascists took over Germany and Italy and when MAO took over China, what group did they quickly target…the more educated members of their society…the universities. In Germany, they burned books that the regime found not to their liking. In China they imprisoned educated individuals…because they perceive them as a threat to power. So it scares me when people want to start restricting our institutions of higher learning trying to ensure that their thoughts are confined to the party line.

Second, humans are primarily emotional beings. Our decision making and our perceptions are strongly influenced by our emotions. The fascists who took over Germany and Italy in the last century knew that fact. And they were able to influence and convince a large number of very smart folks of the validity of their philosophy and views of the world not by rational thought or argument and fact but rather by an appeal to their emotions.

So just because you are smart does not always ensure that you will not make some pretty dumb and/or irrational decisions. I can personally attest to making more than my fair share. So I would suggest to you and others, including myself that we must try to limit the influence of our emotions in decision making.

In earlier times, emotions were very helpful to our species. But as our world becomes more and more complicated, we must be careful of the influence of our emotions on our decision making processes.

Universities should remain a bastion of open thought.
