What about all those young video game players who are now remote pilots of UAVs?

"all those"? Never heard of them. But it is a different case to play computer games when you're young, if that's what this was. And I have nothing categorically against computer games, just MMORPGs, which I'm guessing is not what they played.

I like video games, but WoW sucked. I got killed every time, and it's boring. I got through the first three Tomb Raiders though.

I could imagine that getting killed every time would be boring, yes.

exhumed: your quote provides no evidence against world of warcraft, it provides evidence against other people. i really dont know how anyone can live in close quarters with other people. even with a wall between us it irritates me.

a general question: why is playing a single-player game, where you are pitting yourself against a computer opponent, better, or at least less bad, than playing an MMORPG, where you pit yourself against other human players?

Why is playing a possibly social game such as an MMORPG worse than hanging out in a bar? Why is going to dinner with a group of friends better than running through an instance run of Black Rock Depths with a group of friends?

I think that playing ANY game is ok, as long as it is in moderation. I play video games, but maybe a total of 1-2 hours a week. And I only play them after I have all work done tat needs to be done. Theres nothing wrong or more bad about pitting yourself against human players. as long as again, it is done in moderation.

I don't have the time to search for the studies that were done, but I remember reading somewhere once that things like chat rooms, and MMORPGS are actually BAD for someones social skills! (I'm sure forums were probably in here too).
Reason being that it is a lot easier to take risks in online communication than it is in real life. So over time, people become more and more comfortable with talking to people that they can't actually see and and more uncomfortable with real people.
So, sitting in a bar or going out to dinner is a better option than sitting and being inactive in front of a computer screen in your bedroom. Because even though you are interacting with people over a wire, it is still an anti-social act.

    again: Fuck WoW!

In some of these games, I heard you can accumulate real money.

    1. Playing against a computer is probably less addictive.
    2. If the gameplay actually involves socialization, it isn't, but most likely it is not. Do these players interact outside of the game?? The problem really is addiction, and not caring for anything else, be it barhoping or gameplaying.
    3. Zombification, luck of social interaction.

    Otherwise only because of tradition.

Also when you interact with real friends, you might learn something, you can get help or help others. Does gameplay do the same???

I'm genuinely curious here, has there ever been a noted case of someone who endlessly posted on a forum and accomplished anything? Whenever I encounter these people in real life they seem completely incongruent with the rest of society.
