I'm genuinely curious here, has there ever been a noted case of someone who played a MMORPG or MMORPG type game and accomplished anything? Whenever I encounter these people in real life they seem completely incongruent with the rest of society.

I used to date a girl who played WoW. That was all she did!!! I would come home from work at like, 8:00 at night and she would still be in her PJ's, hadn't eaten anything yet or showered. I would talk about how difficult and stressful, yet fulfilling my day was. And she would say "I leveled today". Yeah, that relationship didn't last long.
Now my new GFs step mom plays it ALL DAY EVERYDAY!!!!! Its unbelievable!!! She doesn't get out of her pajamas either. Her husband brings her her coffee and lunch and dinner and drinks all day long (enabler!!!) And this useless bitch has the audacity to criticize others. It is so fucking frustrating.
Those games should seriously be outlawed. I think they are as bad a illicit drugs.

Funny you should ask. The kid who got the all time high score on defender (granted a more primitive game), invented several earth-shattering things including a water-fountain type apparatus that dispenses Jack Daniels.

They should be slapped and told to get life's and jobs and talk to their fucking families once in a while and then thrown in rehab.

On the bright side, all these idiots playing the games are not outside burning fuel or running people over on the sidewalk.

I'm starting to believe that these online games are just addictive as any drug. One of my best friends plays "Vanguard", a WoW-like game. All he does is "raid' on the weekends...every weekend. I called him yesterday to see if wanted to go get something to eat at the local Italian restaurant, even offered to pay, but no....he had an important raid to go on. Go figure.

My thought is, these games give the opportunity for people to gain respect that they don't get in real life. Most of us don't walk down the street and have totally strangers come up and tell us how bad ass we are...but it happens all the time in games. It makes people feel better about themselves, or believe that are actually "someone".

Bells' husband plays WoW. Or used too.
I think he used to be in the army or sumthink.
I think Bells used to play too.
She used to put people in jail.
    She's retired now.
    She's not that old though.

    I sometimes play this.
    It's free.
People keep picking on me though.
    It makes me real mad.

I used to play Lineage. One of the worst decisions of my life. Even now I still get the "twinge" to go back. I fight it off with my +8 yumi.

Not at all, I worked for a Major Technology company, and most of us, who worked there were MMO gamers. The I.T department however, about 75% of them were avid MMO gamers. But if you're talking about the Uber Elite MMO gamers, then I have to agree with you. They spend their entire lives on the game, I'm talking about 12 to 20 hours a day. I play for about 8 hours per week, if that. And still rank as one of the top PVPers in Warcraft.

But yeah my GFs step mom spends her entire weekends doing "Instances" The whole family feels like they have lost her to this game. Yet noneof them are willing to confront her on it.

I'm sorry about your friend. But if you still want to take someone out to eat...

I used to be addicted to one of those games... Mine was called eve-online. Then one day I saw how stupid, repetitive and pointless the game was and I stopped playing it, I now still play it, maybe a few hours a month. I'm extremely rich in the game and what I basically do in the game now is blow up stuff made by the people described above, then laugh as they whine and send hatemail.

Dude. I saw the pointlessness of EVE in the 14 day trial. I'm already addicted to games that i pay once for. No way I'm continiually paying for them.

I don't know if it's an "accomplishment," but I know of a very successful stock trader who proudly shared with me that he unlocked his Jedi slot in Star Wars Galaxies (back when doing that was a challenge).

What I found most facinating was that when they started: (a) making it easier and easier to get to play a Jedi and (b) nerfing the Hell out of the class's abilities, he took it very personally. It was almost as if he felt he had a "right" to play the pre-nerf class and to demand that it be kept exclusive based on the 1000 hours (or whatever it was) that he "invested" to unlock the character slot.

well depends on what kind of accomplishement you are talking about. Happieness would be the number one accomplishement in anyones life....many mmorpg players are happy in their MMO....some make friends and network etc etc......When i played i met several people all accross the US....also sold my acct for 1600$ when I was finished. Which is a good payout for having fun playing a video game.

As far as being incongruent with society....I happen to think that is a good thing. Too many people who do the same exact thing and think the same exact way is dangerous to individuality and freedom imho.....
