Windows ME is generally regarded as the worst offering ever from MS. But whenever it is discussed online, there are always a few people who would honestly say that they didn't know what the big deal was, it had always worked fine for them.

Looking at internet discussions about Vista, I've been noticing a similar pattern. Vista SP1 has apparently fixed some issues, but looking at this thread, it sure is picky about installing.

I'm sticking with XP for the foreseeable future.

We've had an HP running ME for 8 years. Zero issues. Probably 90% of users only use 20% or so of an OS features. Reviews are usually by keeners and geeks: and pros and cons are peripheral to most users. Our new laptop with Vista is used for the same functions we use a 7 year old laptop with XP...we don't care about new bells andwhistles.

I have a friend who instructs companies on software (Excel and so on). He starts a seminar by asking the class what would like an OS or program do. The majority of the stuff on the 'wish list' is already built in but few folks ever explore their OS or a program beyond a few basic functions.

Well, I use XP and really I am happy with it. BUT I don't want to have to switch to Vista 2 years from now and have a bunch of problems doing so.

So, if Vista can be toned down so that it's not a memory hog then I don't mind learning a little bit of new interface.

I also had one other question. Does Vista give the user any problems installing programs that may have been copied? I have a lot of software I'll just transfer over and I don't want to have to deal with any issues from the OS.
