No we don't. Biosphere 2 failed. It covered three acres, and could not sustain 8 people for two years.

We cannot launch a spaceship that has 3 acres of land, and even if we did, the lack of gravity would not suit all plant life, and so far we have not found a comprehensive set of plants that will grow in zero G and provide a balanced diet.

We would need to exceed what we can do on Earth, and do it in space. We would have to exceed human endurance records in space. You just don't grasp the enormity of the problem.

This is an extremely myopic perspective. There will never be a good time for space exploration. People don't yearn for the stars when their home lives are happy and contented. Every problem facing us now will be replaced by another in 50 years time, and each one will have the same OMG THINK OF THE CHILDREN appeal of its predecessor. The late 1960s weren't exactly placid and trouble free times, yet space exploration thrived.

Going to space causes zero economic damage. The money is recycled into the economy and the economy actually gains.

Having the taxpayers pay for us to all get free massages causes no economic damage. The money is recycled into the economy and the economy actually gains. And it would feel good. Do you want the intellectual feel good of reading about the exploration of Mars or the physical feel good of a massage?

Sure there might be some side benefits from creating the technology needed to get us to Mars. There would be more benefits if we spent the science dollars on things more useful than going to Mars.

Actually feel good has an economic benefit similar to Hollywood. It is that Maslow's heirarchy of needs....besides, imagine we find out that there is a giant human head in Mars with a library of Knowledge....

A total waste of time. Buck Rogers went to mars about sixty years ago. He met emperor Ming and his daughter and battled with the clay men.

Since others have failed and both failures happened because everything couldn't be "balanced" for long periods of time even with computer controled systems , what makes you think another one will work if nothing new has been found out to eliminate the original problems?

With todays super computers we could just simulate the entire process and find out if it will work or not without requiring millions of dollars to be spent on building another "green house".

Because I have an idea, segmentation of the green house is the key here, a complex system of sensors sensing the change in pressure (as a result of the hole in the system) will seal the sector of that greenhouse with self merging plastic wrap rolls that can be hooked to the specially designed mechanical clutches. The operation on sector sealing will be performed by machines that are located in these sectors permanently for the duty of aggregation and caring for the plants.

it is not a waste of time, this is investing in our civilization future.

Some of that money could better be spent cleaning up the mess we have created. That would be good for everyone.

the mess will never go away, the uncontrollable variable of human population increase deems space expansion or war as the only solutions to the issue.
