    Hello.

How do I download a new operating system for my computer?

Also, it would require an update on windows 2000 ME editions, SP4 or some shit.
Please inform about how it would be possible for one to download use of operating sytems SP4 or some other that would support a DSL internet.

    Thank, you.

    Against my better judgment...

Why do you want a different operating system? What do you have now?

Linux operating systems, such as Ubuntu, are free, and are good alternative to expensive Microsoft operating systems, and can be downloaded from many places. Downloading Microsoft operating systems is almost always piracy, which cannot be discussed here, at least as far as where to go and how to do it.

Probably because his is 8 years old and there are some hardwares/programs not supported by it, specially without SP4.

To the OP: First you have to download SP4 from the Microsoft website. Then you have to tell us which OS you want to download. Then we might tell you that you don't need it or there is a better choice...

I'm glad you can tell what he has. I'm still confused about whether he has 2000 or ME. Mentioning SP4 makes me think probably 2000, but I'll wait for him to clarify.

I think I'm just going to hand him the keys to the car [or perhaps the revolver and bullets], tell him how to shift gears [or tell him how to unlock the safety] then step back and see what happens
    Where do I start.......

Assuming you wanted to download a 'free' non-microsoft OS (like linux), what you will need is a CD burner, and an application installed on your machine for burning CDs.

Next --- go to a place that offers whatever operating system you are interested in trying
    Example -- http://www.ubuntu.com/

The file you download is usually a CD image file called an "iso". It can be anywhere from ~600 megabytes to ~3-4 gigabytes (like the Fedora core DVD iso-----but if you don't have a DVD burner, I wouldn't download one of those).

Next, all you do is use the CD burner program to create the CD using the iso file.

If you are considering installing a brand new OS, you do not need to do anything to your current OS because you're more than likely going to be eliminating, or overwriting it.

    -------------------

If you are currently running Windows 2000, and would like to upgrade it to service pack 4, it does not require "downloading a new Operating System". Service packs are offered free whenever you use the Windows Update feature.

If you are currently running Windows ME on a machine that can barely handle it (IE -- an early Cretaceous era Pentium 2 350mhz CPU with 64 megs of ram, and a hard drive that takes 15 seconds to spin up before it finally starts making the grinding sounds) --- then I would highly recommend NOT trying to change the OS

    Thanks domesticated om!

    Answer me something ok. I have windows 2000 ME, it came with a CD burner, and it isn't too terribly slow: with 128 megs of ram but it's really slow sometimes especially when I start it up;

I can download an sp4. Update to.
    Thanks.

Seriously, I think it is time to buy a new computer (with new OS, preferably XP). You can buy a cheap one under $300 from newegg.com which is still 5 times faster what you have...

    Click on Start^Programs^windows update

or.........you can open Internet explorer, click on the tab that says "Tools", then select "update windows" or "windows update" (I forget the exact naming in IE 6)

    .....or you could click Here

BTW ------- I don't think service pack 4 for Windows ME exists ---- but just in case you wanted to download it and run it, here you go

You do not have Windows 2000, you have Windows ME. They are completely different operating systems. Microsoft no longer supports ME, http://www.microsoft.com/windows/support/endofsupport.mspx . Considering how notoriously unreliable ME is, you should be glad your computer still functions at all. Trying to upgrade the operating system on a machine with such old hardware would only make a bad situation worse. You need a new (or newer) computer.

LOL --- no, this is not what I linked.

I linked the standalone installer for windows 2000 service pack 4
The executable should be called "W2KSP4_EN.EXE"

It depends on whether or not you have any applications or data on your current hard drive you were intending to keep
