I didn't even know they had done it once let alone twice. What about the mammals that live along the shore lines? Is it just natural for them to drown? Third Manmade Grand Canyon Flood Planned For the third time since 1996, officials plan to unleash an artificial flood in the Grand Canyon next month in an effort to restore an ecosystem that was altered by a dam constructed on the Colorado River decades ago. If approved by the U.S. Department of the Interior, next month's flood will scour and reshape miles of sandy banks on the floor of the Grand Canyon. The department's decision is expected this week. The Glen Canyon Dam completed in 1963 upstream from the Grand Canyon, permanently changed the Colorado River, transforming it from a warm, muddy, unpredictable force of nature into a cooler, clearer, tightly controlled water-delivery system. Without spring floods to flush the system and help rebuild beaches and fish habitat, native species suffered even as nonnative fish thrived. The shift helped speed the extinction of four fish species and push two others, including the endangered humpback chub, near the edge....
They're just trying to cover up for the Glen Canyon Dam by patching some of its consequences downstream. Upstream, it drowned a valley the equivalent in beauty, spectacle, scale, interest, and intrinsic worth, to the Valley of Yosemite. "No man made structure in all of American History has been hated so much, by so many, for so long, with such good reason, as the Glen Canyon Dam at Page, Arizona, Shithead Capital of Coconino County." (Edward Abbey)
so basically, you don't know anything about the people that made the decision to build the dam and/or flood the canyon, but you've decided that it's an immoral decision, you decide that the unknown decision makers are atheists and then you come full-circle and equate atheism with immorality - an opinion you held to start with anyway congratulations on a splendid example of circular reasoning
Because it would be more fun to watch everyone fleeing for their lives when they destroy the dam all at once! Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! Think of all those animals watching in horror all that water coming at them! Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
And shut down Las Vegas ? Where would the residents of Golfland go to have the most fun they can have in their lives ?
I've often challenged people to go on the internet and say something so stupid people know they must be joking. I swear, it's not possible! But then, maybe there's a reason for that.
Well, of course it will drown land-dwellers if they don't get out of the way. BTW, the total discharge is a fraction of a natural Grand Canyon flood. The riparian ecosytems in the southwest canyons are dependent on floods, just as forests are often dependent on fires.
I just checked out the gage, went to about 45,000 cfs. Not that much, in 1986? they saw around 95,000 because someone miscalculated and the dam filled. Before the dam it regularly hit 300,000 during the spring thaw. Heck, back in 87 and 88 when I ran it would move from 30,000 to 8,000 everyday. I would hardly call this release a flood. As for Glen Canyon Dam, it generates one hell of a lot of clean power. Got a great lake for parties behind it too.
