Just incase you haven't heard, but you own a HD DVD player, HD DVD is officially dead. So you might want to list it on Ebay as soon as you can and buy a PS3, so you even get a gameconsol with your Blue ray player...

The HD DVDs work nicely as coasters!!!

By the way, we don't buy either or DVDs, because we have OnDemand and get access to so many movies that there is no point in having them on a hard device. Oh yes, and there are the movies on the internet too...

blueray was always going to win this. With the PS3 and Sony and also that it is far better technology holding 50 GB. It would have been stupid for HD DVD to have won because in a few years people would be wanting the higher capacity any.

Why would they want the higher capacity? It is high definition video on both discs, if there is a difference, it's not something your eye can see, or you can be aware of.

Any way, I've yet to switch to DVD.

A small reminder perhaps betamax did had better video and audio quality then VHS. These things are therefore quit unpredictable.
Besides these higher cpacity's will only have some influence on season boxes, their is yust to much memory on either of them to contain yust 1 movie

 

At the moment there is too much memory for a film but future generation films will be much higher then 50 gb. Also, many disc these days come with 2 or 3 DVD's of extras so if they were HD you would be using the 50 gb.

 

There is a limit to the human eye, i.e., there's only so much we can see.

 

Avatar that is true but the quality of a picture and improve a great deal. If videos were up to the standard of a glossy magazine the eye would benefit here.

 

Not really because they still can be played on a cddvd type of playback machine and there are thousands of titles available. Just have to buy a blu ray machine now if you want more titles for your collection.

 

Was going to comment the same thing. Sony lost last time. This time they won. Basically because porn went Blu-Ray(largest sales = porn). They learned their lesson from last time.

 

To add to guru on this. I was reading that a lot of HD films are released in HD as they were filmed in a higher resolution for the cinema. Due to this they can knock out a whole back caterlog of films. However, a lot of them are still not great quality as they are so old.

 

Exactly. Other example is digital cameras. Unless you want to print and blow up pictures, you don't need more than 3-4 Mpixels, which is easier to email and keep on storage. Just because technology can do 3-5-10 times more, there is no need.

Same with storage on HiDef. You don't necesserily have to fill up the whole capacity.

And yes, last time betamax the better system lost. It depends on lots of factors, not always on the technological superiority...

 

Back when it was VHS vs Betamax the consumer was not well educated. These days people research their goods before buying. I would say that the better tech has a far great chance of winning nowadays.

 

I've always believed they should revert to the old disquitte system where the little disk is safly in a plastic shell, they would last way longer

 

720p looks great, but I can't tell the difference between 720 and 1080 unless I'm watching it on a screen bigger than 50" or so. Even then the difference isn't much. A 720p movie can be compressed to just over 4GB with very small loss of quality, a dual layer DVD could easily hold a 720p movie and another 3-4GB of extras. This whole new format is pointless for consumers if you ask me, only Sony and Hollywood are benefitting from it.

beta was and is the superior technology compared to VHS, and is the format used by TV stations to this day...

 

The whole thing confuses me, all these specs and #s mean nothing to me. That is why I leave all this tech stuff up to the man lol

He's trying. I now want a playstation 3 - pretty much just for the blu-ray and it's a powerfull system(for some reason(microsoft) not many games).

I refuse to reward shitty marketing schemes (microsoft/nintento). She can't find a wii, if that's the case this sunday still - we get an PS3.
