    There's a Walmart a block from us. They start at 12/hour. As much work as wanted up to 60 hours/ week. anything over 40 hours is time and a half.


    That's $480/week regular hours....$840 full overtime.

    WalMart employees get good benefits including insurance. They get the satisfaction of working for pay.

    The panhandler is just a bum/beggar.

    I am sorry, but Walmart doesn't pay $12/hour unless you are a supervisor or have 15+ years with them. The starting salary is more like $7 and they don't like to pay overtime.
    Do the math, after tax it is way less than $300...

    $12, a joke. Walmart would have gone into bankruptcy if they had paid such salaries....

    Here you go, the average is $10, so the starting is way less:

    "The company said the wage increases would occur at 1,200 Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores, but it did not say how many employees would be affected. The company employs approximately 1.3 million people at about 3,900 stores in the United States.

    For an employee with a hypothetical starting wage of $6.25 an hour, a 6 percent increase would mean a raise of 37.5 cents an hour, or $3 a day, for a full-time employee working an eight-hour shift.
    company has long declined to say what its average starting salary is, but says its average hourly pay for full-time employees is $10.11."

    I worked a night shift at good ol' wally-world in the heartland of kentucky for a summer, yeah, freggin scary circumstances, but that's a saga for another time... but they started us at $6.40/hr, with an extra fifty cents an hour for night shift hours. I was a part-time employee, and guess what, that $10/hr average hourly pay for full-time employees is just that, for FULL-time employees. There were plenty of fights with employees against managements because management would only hire part-time, in order to make scheduling more flexible and such. For the most part, the average person doesn't make a living off part-time, but even so, Walmart had a policy of trying to make more part-time to cut costs and simplify scheduling, in fact, in my opinion, that makes that statistic just about WORTHLESS, and nothing more than Walmart's appeal to the public to make them come out not so bad.

    Funny enough, before Walmart, I had worked at McDonald's, so now I have two evil corporations under my belt! yay!

    Yeah, but their habit costs $500 a day, so they aren't really getting ahead.

    I've been critical of Wal-Mart, but they saved my friend's life. He managed to get health insurance through Wal-Mart a week before he almost died from an undiagnosed thyroid condition.

    Well folks, I understand one can make much more money than that working an animal act in Tijuana.

    If you want to do that sort of thing.

    The reality is we all trade our training and experience for a wage (presuming we're working for someone else). For that matter, even as self-employed, one takes money for one's knowledge, experience and resultant products - whether physical or intangible. I hate to break it to you if you haven't already found out, but life is not always convenient.

    Panhandling in some locations can be lucrative, but it's a fairly short career. The downside is a total lack of respect from real people, no fringe benefits, no retirement plan and no chance for promotion. Not to mention no dignity.

    What do you really want out of life?

    On average, the percentage of people with health insurance that covers anything except catastrophe drops when a Wal Mart moves in. So no preventive medicine, and higher sever disease rates.

    They kill more than they cure.

    How did having insurance for a week save anyone's life, btw ?

    He needed extensive surgery and a pacemaker. He wouldn't have been able to afford the medicine he needs.

    The big cities on the West Coast are bastions of American left-liberal politics. The people practice what they preach and are generous to the poor. There's no big onus on drinking or drugs like there might be in the Bible Belt so they don't even worry about what the money will be spent on, as long as it makes somebody happy for a little while.

    Once when I was parked an immigrant shamefully asked me for a buck and a half to get the special at Der Wienerschnitzel, and he pointed to the big sign advertising it. He begged me to watch him as he walked over there and got it, because he'd seen so many American panhandlers spend their money in liquor stores.

    Add to that the fact that the weather in L.A. is so balmy that you really can sleep outside about nine nights out of ten, and it's a wonder the entire homeless population of the USA doesn't eventually find its way out there. (I don't imagine they're knocking themselves out to get to Portland!)

    They began congregating in several of the big parks in central L.A., making it difficult for working folks to eat lunch or just walk to work. So the cops established a policy of dispersing them like coyotes, picking them up and moving them by onesies and twosies to other locations. Eventually they just dissipated out to the suburbs. That was an interesting experience. For the first time, suburbanites had to deal with the reality of poverty. There was a little grumbling for the first couple of years, "Good goddess, we can't have people begging on the streets in bloody South Pasadena! What will it do to our property values?" But putting faces on the people instead of making them news headlines changed them. The ruckus died down, every little burg had its handful of poor people, and they learned to coexist. The civic-minded retired ladies had something new and useful to do, making sure they were warm and clean and healthy and not too drunk. And geeze could they browbeat the government social workers into doing their jobs for the ones who could be helped. (Don't ever take on a pack of civic-minded retired ladies!) They learned each other's names, folks gave them odd jobs and home-made food. They always magically had someplace halfway decent to sleep on those two nights a month when the weather wasn't balmy.

    It was like living in a real community where people really do care about each other.

    When was this? Right now Walmart doesn't even like to hire people fulltime, so your friend chances would be slim. I assume even fulltime employees don't get automatic health insurance....

    spider why are you fighting AGAINST universal health care then????

    If you can SEE that your friend only survived because of LUCK (he was lucky enough to get a job BEFORE he got sick) then why do you seem to despise the idea that EVERYONE should have EQUAL access to ALL health care?
