While anti-war protesters chained themselves outside a U.S. Marines recruiting center here, a spokesman said Corps does not plan to abandon the office even though the City Council has officially rolled up the welcome mat.

The Berkeley City Council voted Tuesday to tell the Marines that if its recruiters choose to stay in their rented downtown space "they do so as uninvited and unwelcome guests."

Gunnery Sgt. Pauline Franklin said Friday that while the Corps respects city officials' right to free speech, the Marines would not be leaving.

Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates said he would speak with the Marines' landlord to see if the recruiters could break their lease early without penalty.

The council voted 6-3 Tuesday to tell the Marines that their recruiting station is not welcome in the city. In a separate vote, the council supported the women's peace group Code Pink by giving it a designated parking space in front of the recruiting station once a week for six months and a free sound permit for protesting once a week from noon to 4 p.m.

Weird. Why does every symbolic gesture come from Berkely ? I know the students protested and the HUAAC died there but come on.

A recent Times article, There is no defense against these children of death, by Robert Baer. The article was run in addition to the UK Channel 4’s airing of the Cult of the Suicide Bomber, which left many in a heated debate, or simply questioning the true end to what Baer calls “the cult of the suicide bomber”. Baer is a former CIA intelligence officer, who served in the Middle East, in counter-terrorism. The story was about a 17 year old Pakistani boy, Farman Ullah, who is the world’s first remotely detonated human bomb.

If Americans don't support the war in Iraq, its time they acted like it. Shutting down recruiting stations is a good beginning.

I guess Americans should wait until the Muslims blow all of themselves up before they try to help, would that be better??

I don't recall any Iraqis blowing themselves up before the Americans went to Iraq. Ditto for Afghanistan. Do you?

I think Berkeley has taken a GREAT step. Shut down recruiting stations and stop the war. No troops, no war.

It is very disturbing to see that you don't care about your own children or what happens to them. Your children are supposed to taught educational things that make their lives better. I can see that this new way of treating children is something that Muslims must all enjoy watching happen because I hear nothing from them to put a stop to this insanity.

All I see is US troops have illegally destroyed a country and should get out asap. Its not something I want them to think is ok to do on a regular basis and in any country, including mine.

I don't see why the Marines aren't moving out. If the landlord ended their lease, would they have to move out?

So even you aren't opposed to watching your own children die?

I think more Americans who are against the war should be following the Berkeley example.

Are you ever going to try to prevent the deaths of children bu those terrorists that force them to carry bombs? It would seem you could do much better if only you could help your own Muslim people more by talking to them to prevent terrorism to begin with.

Do I want paranoid people like you shooting civilians in foreign countries. The answer is NO. Look at Vietnam and the great Communist bogey man. Enough is enough.

Do you think the Marines should shut down the station since the Council has voted on it? Is it okay for the Marines to ignore what the US citizens want? Should Berkeley be allowed to exercise their second Amendment rights to make sure the government listens to them?

My sorrow goes out to your children there if people like yourself cannot come to the realization that something is wrong with the terrorists / extremists there more so than Americans trying to keep the peace.

I believe California wanted to be a separate state. Perhaps now would be a good time?

I bet if the US was occupied and bombed there would be a lot of extremists protesting the occupation and brutal destruction of the country.

    Please answer my questions:

Do you ever go out and try to educate anyone to prevent terrorism or extremists from destroying your own people?

Why do you worry so much what happens in America when you could be preventing children from dying in your own country by your own leaders faullts?
