Best Version of Vista

I saw the prices now in Finland.

prices start at 138€ for upgrade and 266€ for full version. Mind you that would be the basic version. Needless to say the advertisers do not mention the prices of the more complete versions. I can imagine a reason why.

I'll wait for about a year or two. And then I'll get one Ultimate from sites like Ebay for lesser money. Or I can completely move to Linux and forget Windows. I don't have the money to get a Mac

what would you reckon would be the best option for a computer noob like myself... well basically I'm like one of those that play some games, listen to music videos etc on their computers... like nothing too fancy in terms of computer complexity... I'm planning on buying a new computer soon that's why i'd like to know what is worth and what isn't worth buying

i have been testing vista for a few months now an i have to say that it not worth upgrading your existing installation of XP.
It is definitely a no no if you want to mess around under the bonnet or test different hardware configurations.
However, if you are a complete beginner, and don't have any legacy computer hardware (or you are buying a new computer) then it is worth it.

BTW, as my main system i currently run an alien os on top of xp pro; but i may change over to vista in a year or so.

 

The only DX10 video card from Nvidia is the 8800 which is upwards of $500.
Does vista require DX10 gpu to use all those nifty features?

 

You don't need DirectX 10 yet, but once it becomes widespread, games will require it. By that point, the cards won't be as expensive.

 

I have noticed that DX10 will only enumerate XBOX controllers thus making my collection of force feedback controllers obsolete. I have only tried it with DX10 apps on WinXP. Is this also the case for Vista, will I have to fork out hundreds for new controllers to run DX10 apps?

That would not surprise me. I strongly suspect, public open-source communities will find a way to gain the benefits of directX10(they will not call it that) with windows XP. Kinda like how they chopped win xp into winxp-lite.

Some of us like *just* the new features, guts and balls of new OS without all that pretty garbage built for the masses. Old school old school.

Does anyone know what Windows versions of games/programs etc will be compatible with Vista? Some Windows 98 stuff never worked with XP and nothing for Dos worked. Does Vista work with anything from XP, 98, or Dos, that would really be 'out of date'?

 

Is there any point in using any version beyond Vista Basic other than being able to use Vista Aero?

Vista Basic seems to have everything anybody could possibly need in an OS.

Home Premium is nothing but basic with Aero feature and crappy multimedia features. It seems to have features important for laptops, but shouldn't Basic be fine for laptops?

Business version doesn't seem to include anything worthwhile other than Remote Desktop capabilities. And the Aero feature if you really care about that.

Ultimate is the same load of nonsense as the other 2, and more worthless nonsense. Other than the Aero feature which is cool, but not really that wonderful and the Remote desktop feature, nothing else about Ultimate seems to be worthwhile. It's the only one that features Deskscapes just to make your desktop look cooler. But if you don't give a crap about that, I really see no point.


All in all, is there anything a professional Windows administrator would really want or need in an OS beyond Vista Basic? Do any of the other versions of Vista offer administrative features that Vista Basic doesn't already have?

Simply put there is mostly difference in regards to backup features and packaged software.
However I remember some outlining points made about limits to the number of "half-opened" TCP connections that Basic could have in comparison to the others.

Btw, Basic isn't supported on laptops.

1. Is Vista Basic really incapable of being installed on a laptop? I know it does not include Windows Mobility Center, but does that mean it cannot be installed on a laptop?

2. I could not find anything regarding TCP or networking. Otherwise, it seems that in terms of desktops, Vista Basic has not less capabilities required for full OS functionality/full OS administration than other versions of Vista. I think some foreign versions limit usage or filesize. Not sure. Other than that, all of the other versions seem to only have more features in terms of multimedia applets, business applets, aesthetics, and security. Basic seems to be fully perfect and capable of internet browsing, filesharing, video production, audio production, 3D CAD design, gaming, etc. without any flaw in relation to other versions.

Might of got Home and Starter mixed up. Home can't handle multiple CPU's apparently, although it can handle multicores. (According to wiki)
