    Aren't cluster bombs illegal?

_The Gulf region has 1.2 million bomblets left unexploded from the 1991 Gulf War and the current war in Iraq. The leftover weapons have killed an estimated 1,220 Kuwaitis and 400 Iraqi civilians.

_U.S. forces in Iraq used 13,000 cluster bombs with almost 2 million bomblets in 2003, during the initial invasion. During the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 against al-Qaida camps and the Taliban government that sheltered them, the United States used 1,228 cluster bombs with 248,056 bomblets; they have killed 127 civilians, 70 percent under the age of 18.

_In Laos, U.S. bombing campaigns during the Vietnam War of the 1960s and 1970s left 9 million to 20 million bomblets, which have killed 11,000 people, three out of 10 of them children.

_Israel dropped an estimated 4 million bomblets in southern Lebanon in its war against the Hezbollah guerrillas last year, and an estimated 1 million did not explode. There were reports that Hezbollah retaliated with cluster bombs of their own.

Why are they still selling them?

Is there a movement in the US to ban sales of cluster bombs?

Does anyone protest to their representatives?

The victims are 98% civilians of which a QUARTER are children

    This is disgusting!

    No Cluster bombs aren't illegal.

But you have a bigger problem, is seems there are mine and bomb clearing teams that have been opprating in Iraq since just after the end of the War, and after any use of CBU today.

    here is citation from a

    Iraq, Landmine Monitor Report 2003
[25] Each cluster bomb or munition contains hundreds of submunitions. .... of the Iraqi Civil Defence Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit based in Mosul, ...
    http://www.icbl.org/lm/2003/iraq.html

We are cleaning up our mess plus the Saddams mess, and have been doing so since 2003.

Monday, a deminer examined a bomb, circled in red, before blowing it up.

Well I guess if the US does not consider them illegal, the Iraqis and Afghanis can look forward to more of them.

Like you cleaned up after Vietnam and the Gulf war?

And I feel so much better knowing it only blows up arms and legs instead of whole kids.

I guess all the mortality figures are from shock

The V.C. were the biggest user of land mines in Vietnam.

The child in your picture is Oriental, that picture is from south east Asia, and that isn't from a cluster bomb.

This is the article that goes with the Picture.

Land mines are the weapons that keep on killing decades after a cease-fire or an end to a war. They are still killing civilians in Vietnam; the Vietnam War ended in 1974

We are trying to help Vietnam, but the mines that are the problem now are from the V.C. they didn't map their mines.

Any proof that is was cluster bombs, you do seem to have a problem fabricating supporting evidence, and could it be that they were killed by Hezbullah using them for shields, your Moslem Fighters do seem to like to hide behind women and children when they shoot at the Infidels.

Seems Italy also supplied mines to Saddam.

This mine very often is founding in Iraq because of as Iran-iraq war as Gulf war
It is the information, offered by Colin King(Jane guide mines).
    Description
VS-50 is a resilient plastic-cased scatterable Anti-Personnel (AP) blast mine. The mine is constructed from three main assemblies: the top and bottom screw onto a central section housing the fuze mechanism. The black neoprene pressure pad, reinforced with either a metal or plastic plate (specified by the customer), seals the cavity in the top section of the mine. In the central section, the fuze has a spring-loaded striker retained by a bar on a pivoted shutter. There is also a small inflatable bladder and a red plastic safety pin to prevent the shutter from pivoting. The base section holds the main charge and has a central threaded detonator well. During transit a blue plug is fitted; this is replaced by the body-coloured stab-sensitive M41 detonator assembly during arming. An electronic anti-handling version of this mine (VS-50 EO3) was also produced. The mine was manufactured in olive green and sand colours, with other options available.

The cluster bombs are still there in Lebanon, Israel has yet to provide a map.

Perhaps if you read the newspaper with interest, you can come across tiny news articles of children still dying from them.

And there is no Hezbullah in Vietnam or the Gulf, where US cluster bombs are still killing civilians as well.

PS please do not spam the thread with landmines. Thank you.

The cluster bombs are being sold legally and are a major threat since the US refuses to ban them.

How about Russia, they have been selling CBU to all with the money, usually Arab countries?

And why shouldn't I spam the thread, you have no problem doing it to other peoples threads, so pound sand.

This thread is about cluster bombs and the US Budget Bill that shows the US is legally selling them around the world and has refused to ban them, knowing full well that 98% of deaths are civilian and a quarter or more of those children.

Then why is India buying this, from Russia
    ?
SMERCH MLRS: It has been mentioned in these columns before that the army has been keen on the Smerch but with funds being invested in other projects (T90s MBT, Sukhoi-30MKI), there was little left for other equipment. The Smerch won't come cheap. The army wants to acquire 14 of these and the cost could be in excess of Rs 1,200 crore (1 crore = 10 million).

The Smerch is a 300mm behemoth designed to hit soft and hard skin targets, artillery and missile systems 20 - 70 km away. The launch vehicle is based on the MAZ-543M 8 x 8 wheeled truck chassis on which is mounted a 12-tube launcher. The vehicle is manufactured by Minsk Auto Zavod (MAZ). Picture shows the tubes arranged as two blocks of four with a single row of four above. The launcher has a crew of four and is capable of a single or salvo firing. A Smerch unit is typically composed of six launchers and six transloaders. The transloader is based on the MAZ-543A 8 x 8 wheeled truck chassis which carries a further 12 rockets. The transloader provides for mechanised loading of the launch vehicle, by means of a hydraulic crane mounted on the vehicle.

The Smerch fires the 300mm 9M55K rocket which has a solid propellant rocket motor. The rocket is 7.5 m long and weighs over 800 kg. It is fitted with either a warhead containing 72 HE-FRAG (High Explosive Fragmentation) submunitions or HE-FRAG separable unitary warhead. It can also be fitted with a warhead containing five Bazalt MOTIV-3F anti-armour submunitions. The "smart" submunitions have dual-colour infrared sensors for terminal guidance and kinetic energy fragment warheads which can reportedly penetrate 70mm of armour at an angle of 30 degrees to the normal. The munitions manufacturer Splav have also developed a new projectile which uses a high-energy composite propellant which will give an increased range of 90 km, and a new warhead that scatters 25 anti-tank mines.
