I think it's strange that some people equate the statement 'I want to control immigration!' with 'OMG, xenophobia!'.

Who here just allows any stranger to walk into their house, without first giving them a look over?

Moderator note: Two posts have been deleted from the Debate thread, because the posters are not agreed debaters for this Debate.

Members are advised to re-read the rules for the Formal Debate forum, in the sticky threads at the top of the thread list.

The current thread is the appropriate place for discussion among non-debaters.

If Immigration control, is not xenophobia, then immigration by itself is not xenophillia. James R bought it up. I merely discussed the response of a mayor and politicians.

Why would someone have to conclude it is "Xenophilia" when your argument seems to be it Australia is xenphobic; one would only need to supply that which is not xenophobicto debate that position, not "Xenophilic". Having any kind of immigration is by basic definition and logic NON-xenophobic. All your "points" in that previous thread are illogical and/or fallacious and would not be recognized in formal debate.

The entire argument is a bit of a fallacy as it relies upon an incorrect definition. Xenophobia is an unreasonable fear of strangers or foreigners. If I teach my young childto avoid talking to strangers, am I just teaching xenophobia, or basic pragmatism?

Precisely. Idealism, unfortunately, has taken precedence over logic.

If I knew that only one in ten of a certain type of snake was poisonous, I certainly would not allow them into the house on the basis that nine in ten wouldn't harm my child.

Whatever nation Xenophobics are from, Australia doesn't want them.
    They've got enough foreigners already.

I realise that the original premise was flawed. I was surprised to see anyone have a debate on this thread, least of all me and James R.

It is indeed a small minority, rather than the whole of the nation, as James R suggested who have been dispossessed due to the large influx of immigrant businesses, and jobs. That, and 9/11 didn't really help smooth things with the resident lebanese muslim population.

    Good man Challenger!
Nice to see people change their opinions.
    So many people won't.

Maybe we should start the whole "say sorry" debate again, even though it has been settled.

P.S. The cronulla riots (As james has said) were started by a small minority, I'm pretty sure there was alcohol involved.
