I'll give you the benefit and assume you are using humour. No provocation? The USA has provoked Iran ever since the crazies overthrew the American's thug puppet over thirty years ago.

Iranian warships off Long Island would not be provocation? Americans just don't get it and how hypocritical the rest of the world sees them. :bugeye: Whose troops are on who's border....thousands of miles away from their own borders. hint:...Iran didn't invade Canada and Mexico.

The reason that they were able to overthrow the Shah was because a American President put a knife in his back, Little Jimmy Carter, and why? because the Shah wouldn't pay protection money to Little Jimmy's Boys.

    Exclusive:

Rôle of US Former Pres. Carter Emerging in Illegal Financial Demands on Shah of Iran

Exclusive. Analysis. By Alan Peters,1 GIS. Strong intelligence has begun to emerge that US President Jimmy Carter attempted to demand financial favors for his political friends from the Shah of Iran. The rejection of this demand by the Shah could well have led to Pres. Carters resolve to remove the Iranian Emperor from office.

The linkage between the destruction of the Shahs Government directly attributable to Carters actions and the Iran-Iraq war which cost millions of dead and injured on both sides, and to the subsequent rise of radical Islamist terrorism makes the new information of considerable significance.

Pres. Carters anti-Shah feelings appeared to have ignited after he sent a group of several of his friends from his home state, Georgia, to Tehran with an audience arranged with His Majesty directly by the Oval Office and in Carters name. At this meeting, as reported by Prime Minister Amir Abbas Hoveyda to some confidantes, these businessmen told the Shah that Pres. Carter wanted a contract. previously awarded to Brown & Root to build a huge port complex at Bandar Mahshahr, to be cancelled and as a personal favor to him to be awarded to the visiting group at 10 percent above the cost quoted by Brown & Root.

The group would then charge the 10 percent as a management fee and supervise the project for Iran, passing the actual construction work back to Brown & Root for implementation, as previously awarded. They insisted that without their management the project would face untold difficulties at the US end and that Pres. Carter was trying to be helpful. They told the Shah that in these perilous political times, he should appreciate the favor which Pres. Carter was doing him.

According to Prime Minister Hoveyda, the Georgia visitors left a stunned monarch and his bewildered Prime Minister speechless, other than to later comment among close confidantes about the hypocrisy of the US President, who talked glibly of God and religion but practiced blackmail and extortion through his emissaries.

The multi-billion dollar Bandar Mahshahr project would have made 10 percent management fee a huge sum to give away to Pres. Carters friends as a favor for unnecessary services. The Shah politely declined the personal management request which had been passed on to him. The refusal appeared to earn the Shah the determination of Carter to remove him from office.

Oreodont, are you familar with the Cold War? Hostile foriegn war ships off our costal waters is nothing new to the United States. We lived for almost 50 years with nuclear armed war ships off our costal waters. Warships in international waters does not is not a provocation. Occasionally, those warships would come inside our territorial waters...again no provaction. We did not attack the ships of the Soviet Union. We did not hold them hostage.

Did any of them overthrow your president, install an autocrat and train a death squad in your country for 25 years and support both sides in a war for 8 years.

Had any of them destroyed a country on either side of your border or funded and armed extremists in your country?

Would the above made a difference to how the foreign warships on your coastal waters would be viewed?

We did not over throw your president. Mossadegh was your prime minister. And I believe that Shaw was elected Shaw in 1925. I will grant you the government of the United States had no business messing with the elected government of Iran in 1954 under the Eisenhower administration (US).
The Shaw had mismanaged the country up until the Carter Administration. You can see from Buffalo's comments that some Americans wanted us to continue to interfer in your domestic affairs. Carter chose not to do same. The world has emerged in recent years from the darkness of the cold war. A lot of what happened in international affairs was because of the cold war between the United States and the Soviet Union.
We need to get past that period and learn to trust each other. Too many of our brothers and sisters want to divde us. We, regardless of our heritage or history need to learn to trust each other, respect each other, value our differences, and create a better world for our children. When we make mistakes, admit them and correct them. Forgive tresspasses as we would wish others would forgive us. For non of us are without sin.

Then get your troops and warships out of there and stop funding and arming the extremists.

Pointless to talk of peace with a forked tongue.

By the way, Sandy doesn't like Carter either. He could have sent American troops in to prop up the Shaw, but he did not. And it would not have been the right thing to do either. But Iran needs to be a responsible global citizen too. And yes, I know Bush has made some big blunders. Almost 75 percent of the American population does not support Bush II. His days are numbered and will be out of power within a year. Bush II did not even get most of the votes in the 2000 election. I hope this time we will be able to give the world a better leader.

I am not aware of us funding any extremists. So if you can provide detail, it would be appreciated.

When the Iranian government falls, and SpAM has the sharpest fork tongue of all, BAM, it a wonder she does't cut her throat with it.

Yes SpAM the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini was so good for Iran.

Under the Ayatollah, Iran was wrenched backward from widespread economic development and social change and onto a path that was broadly hostile to the Western world.

Many longtime Iranian opponents of the Shah hoped that the Ayatollah would turn over power and allow a democratic society to emerge. But he held to his dream of an Islamic republic and retained his Islamic fervor -scuttling a tentative economic and political opening to the West in February 1989 with his call for the killing of a British author, Salman Rushdie, whose novel ''The Satanic Verses'' was deemed to have blasphemed the faith.

There was no one in Iran with sufficient authority to challenge the Ayatollah successfully. In the aftermath of the revolution, he moved relentlessly toward his theocratic goal, consolidating power and silencing the opposition.

In a frenzy of political retribution and Islamic purification, thousands of people were executed in public, including torturers, criminals, homosexuals, prostitutes and the Shah's officials.

A 1987 report of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights estimated that as many as 7,000 people were shot, hanged, stoned or burned to death after the 1979 revolution.

Lifelong supreme authority was vested in the Ayatollah, with the title Velayat Faghi, or Religious Leader. Wide Dissent in the Land

To the dismay of the National Front and other secular groups that had helped lead the struggle against the Shah and hoped to establish a modern democracy, the Ayatollah moved to impose Islamic rule. Orders Women To Wear Veils

He ordered women to wear veils and chadors, the full-length gowns. He allowed no criticism of his rule, and when his Oil Minister resisted demands for a purge of non-Islamic workers among the industry's 40,000 employees, he dismissed him as a traitor.

Asked by the Italian journalist Oriana Fallaci in 1979 about reports of executions of homosexuals, prostitutes and adulterers, the Ayatollah said: ''If our finger suffers from gangrene, what do you do? Do you let the whole hand, and then the body, become filled with gangrene, or do you cut the finger off?''

That the Ayatollah's regime managed to survive that grueling conflict was a striking success of sorts. After the initial Iraqi invasion, the Iranian Army, with the help of Revolutionary Guards, threw itself into the defense of the country. Volunteer suicide squads and masses of young conscripts retook land with human wave attacks, and then lost it again, and the Ayatollah's Government used the nationalist fervor to consolidate its rule. The war was fought to a stalemate.

Casualties on both sides were immense and the financial cost enormous. The war threatened a new international oil crisis as attacks increased on tankers in the gulf. In July 1987, the United States put naval forces in the gulf to escort Kuwaiti tankers.

But not with out a victory,

Now comes a poll that says … Americans want to win in Iraq!

The survey shows Americans want to win in Iraq, and that they understand Iraq is the central point in the war against terrorism and they can support a U.S. strategy aimed at achieving victory, said Neil Newhouse, a partner in POS. The idea of pulling back from Iraq is not where the majority of Americans are.

Check out these poll numbers of what Americans are thinking:

By a 53 percent - 46 percent margin, respondents surveyed said that Democrats are going too far, too fast in pressing the President to withdraw troops from Iraq.
By identical 57 percent - 41 percent margins, voters agreed with these statements: I support finishing the job in Iraq, that is, keeping the troops there until the Iraqi government can maintain control and provide security and the Iraqi war is a key part of the global war on terrorism.
Also, by a 56 percent - 43 percent margin, voters agreed that even if they have concerns about his war policies, Americans should stand behind the President in Iraq because we are at war.

SAM, when I said with draw troops, I was refering to troops in Iraq. As Buffalo points out, our Naval vessels are in the Gulf at the request of the Gulf States. So they will continue to patrol the Gulf as long as the Gulf States want them.
